Ted Lasso Season 4 episode 8 puts Richmond’s progress under pressure when Gemma suffers a frightening injury, while Roy and Keeley finally confront what still exists between them.
Ted Lasso Season 4 episode 8, titled “Follow the Anger,” begins with the Lady Greyhounds enjoying their strongest run yet. Richmond is climbing the league table, the players are adding their own messages around the “Believe” sign, and Gemma Jay (Abbie Hern) has become the league’s leading scorer.
Then one moment changes everything.
Gemma suffers a serious knee injury during a game, leaving Alice Chilton (Tanya Reynolds) overwhelmed with guilt and the rest of Richmond unsure how long they might lose their star striker. Meanwhile, Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) and Keeley Jones (Juno Temple) take a chaotic trip to Chelsea that forces them to stop avoiding their feelings.

Gemma’s Pursuit Of A Hat-Trick Ends Badly
Richmond enters the episode in excellent form. A montage shows the Lady Greyhounds winning matches and steadily moving up the second-division standings, with Gemma leading their attack.
Against Charlton Athletic, Gemma scores twice as Richmond takes control of the game. Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) considers substituting her to give her some rest and another striker some minutes.
Gemma wants one more goal.
Alice supports her desire to chase a hat-trick, and Ted agrees to leave her on.
Moments later, Gemma turns after the ball and badly injures her knee.
The celebration disappears instantly.
Richmond Waits For Answers About Gemma
Back at Richmond, Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham), Leslie Higgins (Jeremy Swift), Zelda Southport (Tracey Ullman), and the coaching staff discuss what comes next.
The initial assessment provides a huge range of possibilities. Gemma could miss several weeks, or the injury could require surgery and keep her out for much longer. An MRI scan is needed before anyone can know for certain.
The bigger frustration is that Richmond cannot get her examined immediately.
Keeley questions whether a star from the men’s team would have to wait under the same circumstances. Rebecca contacts the club’s doctor and pushes for faster treatment, but her attempt to pressure him backfires when he chooses to walk away from his work with Richmond instead.
Rebecca has already sent Gemma a care package. Unfortunately, it contains tree nuts, which Gemma is allergic to.
The thought counts. The research could use some work.
Alice Learns Gemma May Leave Football
Alice visits Gemma at her parents’ home expecting to discuss rehabilitation.
Instead, Gemma tells her that the injury has changed how she views her future. She has been offered a prestigious law internship and is considering stepping away from football to pursue it.
The news hits Alice hard.
She had encouraged Ted to keep Gemma on the pitch, so she already feels responsible for the injury. Now she fears that decision could also end Gemma’s football career.
Alice initially begins responding with anger, but catches herself before falling back into her old habits. She apologizes and leaves rather than turning Gemma’s uncertainty into another argument.
It is progress, even if Alice does not feel particularly good about it.
Roy Prepares For His Chelsea Homecoming
Elsewhere, Roy has a different problem.
Chelsea is adding him to its Wall of Legends, which means he is expected to give a speech. Roy would much rather skip the whole thing.
He asks Ted for advice while struggling with what he wants to say, particularly to Keeley.
After his breakup with Dr. Erin Beaumont (Laura Haddock), Roy knows his feelings for Keeley never went away. What he cannot figure out is when or how to tell her.
Ted encourages him to worry less about finding a perfect moment.
Roy soon gets an opportunity to test that advice, although the journey to Chelsea could hardly go worse.
Higgins Finds Something Wrong With Richmond’s Shares
While everyone focuses on Gemma, Higgins notices another threat developing inside the club.
Several supporters who own shares in AFC Richmond have quietly sold them. Higgins begins calling former shareholders and receives vague or conflicting explanations about why.
Eventually, he learns that some supporters were offered money and other incentives to sell. At least one person suggests that pressure was involved.
The shares appear to have been purchased through different offshore companies, making it difficult to identify who is behind them. Higgins begins to suspect that someone is secretly accumulating enough ownership to threaten Rebecca’s control of Richmond.
Suddenly, Richmond has a problem much larger than football.
Alice Finally Lets Herself Break Down
Back at training, Gemma’s absence hangs over everyone.
Ted and Coach Beard (Brendan Hunt) are unsure how to help the squad move forward. Alice argues that they need to practice without Gemma because that is now the reality they have to face.
But Alice is struggling more than anyone.
Ted eventually finds her sobbing and sits beside her. Instead of trying to immediately cheer her up, he helps her slow down and breathe.
When the players join them, Ted talks openly about sadness and the pressure people feel to hide their emotions in sport. He adds another message beside the “Believe” sign, encouraging everyone to let those feelings out rather than pretending they are fine.
Ted speaks to the whole team, but Alice knows the message is also meant for her.
Roy And Keeley Take The Long Way To Chelsea
Roy and Keeley finally set off for Stamford Bridge in Roy’s heavily upgraded new car.
The car promptly becomes a nightmare.
It gets trapped between bollards, Roy’s phone disappears beneath a seat, and the electrical system fails. After escaping through the sunroof, Roy and Keeley abandon the vehicle and take the subway instead.
There, Roy admits that confined spaces make him uncomfortable.
Then comes the much bigger revelation: he and Erin have broken up.
The news changes the mood between him and Keeley immediately. As the crowded train pushes them together, the two nearly kiss.
Even public transport refuses to make their reunion easy, though. Their journey suffers another delay, and they eventually resort to an electric scooter to reach Chelsea.
Alice Fights For Gemma
Alice’s guilt eventually turns into something more productive.
She goes to Rebecca and explains that Gemma needs to know Richmond values her as a person rather than simply as its leading goalscorer.
Then Alice returns to Gemma.
This time, she does not order her to stay or dismiss her interest in law. Alice simply asks her to think carefully about why she might leave football.
If Gemma truly wants another life, Alice can accept that. But walking away because the injury has frightened her would mean allowing fear to make the choice.
It is a meaningful change for Alice.
Earlier in the season, she pushed players because she believed toughness meant refusing to bend. Now, she supports Gemma by giving her room to choose.
Higgins Follows The Anger
Higgins continues tracing Richmond’s disappearing shares and eventually visits Mae (Annette Badland) at the Crown & Anchor pub.
Mae does not want to be seen openly helping him, but she gives him one useful piece of advice: look for the anger behind the scheme.
That immediately points Higgins toward one person.
With Zelda present, he tells Rebecca that he suspects her ex-husband Rupert may be secretly buying the shares to regain influence over Richmond.
For now, however, it remains only a theory. The real buyer has not been identified, leaving Richmond with a mystery that could become one of the season’s biggest threats.
Roy And Keeley Finally Say What They Mean
Roy and Keeley eventually reach Stamford Bridge.
But they are too late.
The Wall of Legends ceremony has already ended, leaving only a few Chelsea employees behind. Instead of letting Roy quietly escape, they encourage him to give his speech anyway.
Roy begins by talking about Chelsea and his career.
Then he remembers Ted’s advice.
Rather than waiting for some perfectly planned romantic moment, Roy turns the speech toward Keeley. He finally tells her how important she remains to him and asks for another chance.
Keeley admits that seeing Roy move forward with Erin scared her because she still wanted him too.
They kiss.
After seasons of missed timing, breakups, jealousy, and conversations neither wanted to have, Roy and Keeley finally choose each other again.
Richmond Shows Gemma She Is Not Alone
The following day, Gemma prepares for her MRI scan with Erin overseeing her care.
Richmond’s top goalscorer tells Alice that she has postponed the law internship. She still loves football and does not want fear to decide when she leaves it.
Alice then brings her outside, where the Lady Greyhounds are waiting.
The team has gathered at the hospital to support Gemma, promising that whatever the scan reveals, she will not face the recovery alone. Rebecca also arrives with a replacement care package, this time filled with things Gemma can actually enjoy.
Gemma heads inside for the MRI.
The episode ends before revealing the result.
Richmond’s Biggest Battles Are Only Beginning
“Follow the Anger” gives Richmond one of its toughest episodes this season without taking away the progress the Lady Greyhounds have made.
Gemma’s injury hurts because she has become central to the team’s rise, but the aftermath reveals something equally important. The players who once struggled to function beyond their cliques now show up together when one of their own needs them most.
Alice also reaches another milestone. She cannot undo the decision that preceded Gemma’s injury, but she finally stops turning guilt into anger and uses it to become the supportive coach she has spent the season learning to be.
Roy and Keeley get a happier breakthrough. Their reunion may solve the question of whether they still love each other, but future episodes can now explore whether they have actually learned enough from their first relationship to make another attempt work.
The larger threats remain unresolved.
Viewers still have to learn the extent of Gemma’s injury and whether Richmond can continue its promotion push without its leading scorer. Higgins’ investigation also leaves Rebecca facing the possibility that someone is quietly trying to take control of the club.
With only two episodes left, Richmond is fighting on two fronts.
One could determine the Lady Greyhounds’ season. The other could determine who gets to call AFC Richmond theirs.
