Sang-beom Struggles With His Traumatic Past in Doctor X: Mafia in White Episode 7
Episode 7 of Doctor X: Mafia in White opens with a flashback to the Gwangju Democratic Uprising. Former president Ji Du-seok returns home after the riots. As a military officer, he helped suppress the protests through brutal violence. He leaves his bloodstained shoes at the entrance, revealing the horrors he witnessed and took part in.
In the present, Su-jeong notices Du-seok’s name on the patient tag outside the VIP room next to Sang-beom’s. Meanwhile, Won-jin remains shaken after rescuing Sang-beom from the rooftop.
Dr. Do approaches Won-jin and asks whether Sang-beom attempted suicide because he learned about Du-seok’s arrival at GUMC. Elsewhere, Su-jeong and Tae-kyeong continue monitoring Sang-beom. The elderly patient repeatedly wakes up screaming because of his nightmares.
Tae-kyeong wonders whether Sang-beom has ever experienced a peaceful night. Su-jeong also thinks about Hee-sook and wonders if she used to check on her whenever she had nightmares as a child.
Later, Hee-sook brings food for Su-jeong, Won-jin, and Tae-kyeong during their night shift. She informs them that GUMC plans to transfer Sang-beom to accommodate the former president. She also reveals that Sang-beom’s regular doctor, Dr. Woo Jae-gyeong, wants to take him back home.
Su-jeong Gives Sang-beom a Reason to Live
Dr. Woo later explains Sang-beom’s past to the doctors. During the uprising, Sang-beom went to the school where his brother, Seung-beom, and other protesters had taken shelter. He refused to abandon his brother when the military arrived. However, the soldiers shot him during the attack.
Su-jeong suspects that Sang-beom agreed to the surgery because he secretly hopes to die during the procedure. Dr. Woo feels shocked by her observation. He then begs Sang-beom to keep living despite the pain he has endured.
Su-jeong also promises to perform a successful operation. She wants Sang-beom to have the chance to enjoy a better life after decades of suffering.
Meanwhile, Won-jin worries that Sang-beom might attempt suicide again even if he survives. Su-jeong becomes upset with Hee-sook for losing hope in the patient. She reminds her of how Hee-sook supported her during difficult times.
Tae-kyeong then asks Su-jeong if she has a plan to help Sang-beom overcome his resistance to surgery. That night, Sang-beom looks toward Du-seok’s VIP room. He returns to his bed and begins crying. His reaction makes Su-jeong even more concerned.
Later, Su-jeong encounters members of the Magnolia Society. Chairman Kim tells her that the hospital has cancelled the surgery and advises her to rest. However, she refuses to accept their decision. Instead, she visits the emergency room and asks Seong-jin to help her prepare something for Sang-beom.
The following morning, Sang-beom and Dr. Woo prepare to leave the hospital. However, Su-jeong takes Sang-beom to a private room before they can depart.
With help from Seong-jin, Won-jin, Tae-kyeong, Hee-sook, and Director Bu, Su-jeong recreates the scene of the attack that changed Sang-beom’s life. She reminds him that his brother was not the only person who sacrificed himself to save him. The other protesters also gave their lives so he could survive.
Su-jeong urges Sang-beom to honor their sacrifices by giving life another chance. Her words finally move him to speak. He opens up about the guilt he has carried for decades and agrees to undergo surgery. Su-jeong feels relieved that he has finally chosen to fight for his life.
Su-jeong Performs the Operation Under Pressure
Su-jeong begins Sang-beom’s surgery later that morning. While under anaesthesia, Sang-beom dreams about spending time with Seung-beom in their hometown. The brothers share ice cream, sing karaoke, and enjoy a drink together. Sang-beom also dreams of putting his brother to bed as they lie beside each other.
Meanwhile, the doctors wait for Su-jeong to locate the bullet fragments in Sang-beom’s skull. During the procedure, she asks Tae-kyeong to leave the operating room and wait at the end of the hallway. She then hides the extracted fragments from the cameras, preventing the other doctors from seeing them.
After the operation, several doctors surround Su-jeong and demand to inspect the fragment. She distracts them by throwing a fake vial toward Tae-kyeong. The doctors immediately chase after him to examine its contents.
Director Bu begins to suspect that the fragment might not be a bullet. He questions whether Sang-beom actually had a bone fragment lodged in his skull. Su-jeong refuses to confirm his suspicion.
She also wonders whether GUMC would have approved the operation if the hospital had known the truth from the beginning.
Later that night, Su-jeong gives the real vial to Won-jin, who passes it to Hee-sook. Hee-sook arranges DNA testing to identify the fragment. Meanwhile, Sang-beom begins recovering from surgery, and Su-jeong stays beside his bed. She wonders whether he will finally stop experiencing his nightmares.
The Truth Behind the Fragment Changes Everything in Doctor X: Mafia in White Episode 7
The Magnolia Society members become furious after learning that Su-jeong and Director Bu may have misled them about the bullet fragment. They worry about the upcoming press conference and how the revelation could damage their reputations.
Meanwhile, Su-jeong and Tae-kyeong check on Sang-beom. She asks whether he still sees visions of his brother, but he denies experiencing any hallucinations.
Hee-sook soon receives a call from the DNA clinic. The test confirms that the bone fragment matches Seung-beom’s DNA. She immediately shares the results with Su-jeong, who rushes to Sang-beom’s room.
However, they discover that the patient has disappeared. The doctors search the hospital before expanding their search outside the facility. Hee-sook drives Su-jeong, Tae-kyeong, and Won-jin around the city as they try to find him.
Meanwhile, Mayor Im Ho-seok attends the press conference and takes credit for saving Sang-beom’s life. He leaves Director Bu to answer the reporters’ questions.
The reporters question GUMC’s decision to proceed with the operation after discovering that Sang-beom did not have a bullet fragment in his skull. Director Bu explains that the hospital performed the surgery to save Sang-beom’s life and end his suffering.
A flashback then reveals Hee-sook’s role in the decision. She previously refused payment for Sang-beom’s operation and asked Director Bu and Dr. Do not to charge the patient either. Director Bu admired her compassion and commitment.
Back in the present, Director Bu denies that GUMC ever considered transferring Sang-beom to accommodate the former president. He insists that saving the elderly patient reflected the hospital’s duty as medical professionals.
Suddenly, a Code Blue announcement interrupts the press conference. The hospital declares former president Ji Du-seok dead after he suffers cardiac arrest.
Sang-beom Finds Peace With His Brother’s Memory
Meanwhile, Sang-beom visits a restaurant and has a drink. He eventually walks into a karaoke establishment, where Su-jeong and the others finally find him.
Su-jeong tells him that the fragment came from Seung-beom’s body. She explains that he has carried a piece of his brother inside his skull since the uprising.
Sang-beom holds the vial and realizes that he has kept a physical connection to his brother all these years. Overwhelmed by the revelation, he thanks Su-jeong for saving his life.
The episode ends with news reports confirming that military forces killed innocent protesters during the Gwangju Democratic Uprising. Other reports announce a medical strike following a new government policy. Meanwhile, Tae-kyeong waits for Su-jeong while she enjoys a meal.
Episode 7 delivers an emotional story about survivor’s guilt, sacrifice, and the lasting effects of historical violence. Su-jeong’s creative approach to helping Sang-beom gives the episode a touching highlight, while the DNA revelation adds an unexpected emotional twist. The episode also exposes GUMC’s political interests and reinforces Su-jeong’s commitment to putting her patients before the hospital’s reputation.
