Su-jeong Misses Her Graduation Ceremony in Doctor X: Mafia in White Episode 9
Episode 9 of Doctor X: Mafia in White opens with a flashback to 2014. Su-jeong misses her graduation and swearing-in ceremony after staying up all night to observe a surgery. Hee-sook and Eung-gu rush home and find her unconscious at her desk. Although Hee-sook scolds her for missing the ceremony, she helps Su-jeong take the Hippocratic Oath at home. They also take a photograph to mark the occasion.
In the present, Hee-sook looks at the same photograph while Su-jeong operates on Ga-eul. She recalls her conversation with Director Bu about Su-jeong’s identity as Doctor X. Hee-sook neither confirms nor denies his suspicion. Instead, she accuses him of making assumptions that could damage Su-jeong’s career.
Moreover, Hee-sook brings up Director Bu’s glaucoma diagnosis and questions whether it forced him to stop performing surgeries. Her remark catches him off guard. However, Director Bu insists that he now believes Su-jeong is Doctor X because she consistently volunteers for complicated operations.
Meanwhile, Tae-kyeong and another intern arrive at the operating room to assist Su-jeong and Won-jin with Ga-eul’s surgery. Hee-sook grows concerned that Director Bu might use his discovery against Su-jeong.
Su-jeong successfully completes Ga-eul’s surgery 40 minutes ahead of schedule. Outside the operating room, Ga-eul’s grandmother anxiously checks on the recovering child while the doctors watch from a distance.
GUMC Faces the Consequences of the Medical Strike
Elsewhere, Dr. Do and Dr. Bae discuss the ongoing intern strike. They also acknowledge that Seong-gyu will no longer work alongside them. When Seong-gyu enters the elevator, Dr Bae asks him to keep in touch. Soon after, the two senior doctors discover that the operating rooms and emergency department stand empty because of the medical staff’s walkout.
That night, Hee-sook informs the group that Director Bu knows Su-jeong’s identity as Doctor X. Fearing that he will destroy Su-jeong’s career, she urges her to leave GUMC before things get worse. However, Su-jeong refuses to quit. She insists that she still has unfinished work and presents Hyeon-a’s medical records.
Mi-gyeong feels shocked after reviewing the complexity of Hyeon-a’s abdominal tumour. She believes that no existing procedure can treat the child. Nevertheless, Su-jeong refuses to give up and continues searching for a solution. Hee-sook warns her about the risks and tries to discourage her from taking the case.
Later, Su-jeong sits alone in her room and studies Hyeon-a’s case. Eung-gu checks on her and discusses the difficult operation. The case reminds him of his own daughter, whom he lost. He tells Su-jeong that he admires her willingness to risk her career to save Hyeon-a. Furthermore, he expresses confidence that she will find a solution, just as she always does.
Seong-gyu Announces His Resignation in Doctor X: Mafia in White Episode 9
The following day, Seong-jin finds Tae-kyeong sleeping in the emergency department and wakes him. Won-jin soon joins them, and the three discuss the strike scheduled to begin within hours. Meanwhile, reporters arrive at GUMC to cover the medical staff’s planned walkout.
Elsewhere, Seong-gyu packs his belongings in the staff room. While gathering his things, he discovers a note from Tae-kyeong tucked inside one of his books. The message reminds him of his first days as a resident at GUMC and his earlier interaction with Dr Bae.
Seong-gyu tries on his jacket one last time. A fellow intern then rushes into the room with an update from the Ministry of Health. However, Seong-gyu ignores the threatening message and leaves the hospital. He later addresses the reporters as the head of the interns, announcing that he will resign if the medical authorities fail to meet their demands.
Su-jeong Proposes an Unprecedented Surgery
Meanwhile, Su-jeong approaches Director Bu and Dr Do with a request to operate on Hyeon-a. Dr Do initially refuses, but Su-jeong reminds them of their agreement. They promised to let her choose her patients if she completed Ga-eul’s surgery in under six hours. Since she fulfilled that condition, she expects them to honor their word.
Despite Dr Do’s objections, Director Bu approves the request and asks Su-jeong to present the case at a medical conference. During the discussion, the doctors examine the tumor’s complexity and emphasize the enormous risks. Most of them believe that Hyeon-a has no chance of recovery.
However, Su-jeong presents a different approach. She proposes dividing the massive tumor into six sections and performing separate operations on the affected organs. She estimates that the entire procedure will take 15 hours, leaving the doctors alarmed by the scale of her plan.
Dr Do and Dr Bae question her proposal and demand that she promise not to fail. Su-jeong then explains that she intends to temporarily remove the affected organs from Hyeon-a’s body. This approach would allow several surgeons to operate on different organs simultaneously and reduce the overall recovery time.
Director Bu points out that the procedure has never been performed before. Therefore, the hospital must obtain approval from the Institutional Review Board (IRB). Su-jeong objects because the approval process could delay the operation. She argues that Hyeon-a cannot afford to wait.
Director Bu also doubts that any surgeon will agree to participate. He asks the doctors at the conference to volunteer, but no one steps forward. Won-jin tells Su-jeong that convincing them will serve no purpose. Still, Su-jeong shows the group a photograph of Hyeon-a and begs them to help save her. Won-jin calls the doctors cowards as they leave the room.
Later, Won-jin encourages Su-jeong to proceed with the operation even if she must work alone. He also offers to help her prepare. That night, Su-jeong returns home and quietly slips into her room before Hee-sook can confront her.
Doctor X: Mafia in White Episode 9 Recap: Su-jeong Risks Her Career to Save Hyeon-a
The next morning, Su-jeong and Won-jin review the surgical plan. Tae-kyeong then brings Hyeon-a and her mother to the operating room. Before the procedure, the young girl thanks Su-jeong for agreeing to operate, even though she might not wake up afterwards. Su-jeong reassures her and promises to bring her through the surgery safely.
Despite her confidence, Su-jeong privately worries about the possibility of failure. Meanwhile, Tae-kyeong overhears Hyeon-a’s mother speaking to her husband about the operation. He becomes emotional when the mother reassures her husband that their daughter will survive.
That night, Director Bu invites Dr Do for a drink. They discuss the possibility that the hospital might shut down because of the strike. They also reflect on Su-jeong’s desperate appeal to the doctors during the conference. Neither man finds the moment as inspiring as they expected.
Elsewhere, Hee-sook confronts Su-jeong about the operation. She warns that a failed procedure could destroy Su-jeong’s career. Su-jeong responds by showing her a photograph of Hyeon-a, hoping to change her mind. She also leaves a resignation letter behind. This decision would protect Hee-sook’s agency from the consequences if the surgery fails.
The following day, Hyeon-a enters the operating room as Su-jeong, Won-jin, and Tae-kyeong prepare for the procedure. Dr Do and Dr Bae discuss Su-jeong’s decision to proceed without IRB approval. Sun-ae raises the same concern with Director Bu, who is shocked to learn that Su-jeong plans to perform the operation with almost no support.
Meanwhile, the Magnolia Society gathers at GUMC to vote alongside the medical staff participating in the strike. Seong-gyu leads the meeting, while Dr Do and Dr Bae remain distracted by the ongoing surgery.
Suddenly, Dr Do leaves the meeting and rushes to the operating room. He decides to assist Su-jeong with the high-risk procedure. Hee-sook, Eung-gu, and Mi-gyeong also arrive at GUMC to check on her progress.
However, the operation takes a dangerous turn when Hyeon-a’s blood pressure drops sharply. Dr Do panics as the patient’s condition deteriorates. At that moment, Hee-sook enters the operating room to help with the procedure, leaving the team facing another critical challenge.
Episode 9 of Doctor X: Mafia in White builds suspense through Su-jeong’s determination to save Hyeon-a despite the medical strike and the doctors’ refusal to support her plan. The proposed 15-hour operation adds tension, while Hee-sook’s concerns and Su-jeong’s decision to submit her resignation letter reveal the personal and professional risks involved. The dramatic cliffhanger, with Hyeon-a’s blood pressure dropping and Hee-sook joining the surgical team, sets up an intense continuation.
