Ted Lasso season 4 episode 1 brings Ted back to Kansas City before an unexpected Richmond reunion forces him to decide whether coaching can once again become part of his family’s life.
Ted Lasso season 4 episode 1, titled “Home,” premiered on August 5 and picks up years after Ted (Jason Sudeikis) left AFC Richmond to return to Kansas. His old soccer (football) life may be behind him, but the season premiere quickly shows that Ted has never fully stopped thinking like a coach.
Ted now works at a grocery store and spends more time with his teenage son, Henry (Grant Freely). However, his comfortable routine starts to feel increasingly small when Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham), Keeley (Juno Temple), and Higgins (Jeremy Swift) arrive from London with an offer that could change everything.

Ted Lasso’s Quiet Kansas Life Hides Something Missing
Ted Lasso season 4 episode 1 opens with Ted appearing to have settled into life in Kansas City. He works as an assistant manager at a grocery store, where his usual optimism and people skills remain intact.
Even without a soccer team, Ted still acts like a coach. When a young employee gets into trouble for stealing, Ted tries to teach him a lesson rather than simply embarrass or punish him.
The job gives Ted people to talk to and problems to solve, but it does not give him the purpose that coaching once did. He continues helping others while receiving little recognition for the leadership he brings to the workplace.
Soccer also keeps pulling his attention elsewhere. Whenever Ted notices a practice or game nearby, his focus naturally shifts toward it.
He does not even coach Henry’s soccer team. Ted believes being a father and being a coach can sometimes require different approaches, so he chooses to support his son from the sidelines instead.
Meanwhile, Ted and his ex-wife Michelle (Andrea Anders) have developed a friendly co-parenting relationship. They laugh together after Henry gets into trouble at school for writing down lyrics from Public Enemy’s “Black Steel In The Hour Of Chaos” that the principal mistakes for something more concerning.
Life is peaceful, but something still feels unfinished.
Rebecca, Keeley, And Higgins Arrive With An Offer
Ted Lasso’s routine changes when Rebecca, Keeley, and Higgins surprisingly arrive in Kansas City.
AFC Richmond is preparing to launch a women’s football team, and the project comes with serious challenges. Financial pressure and poor support continue to hurt women’s clubs, with the closure of another women’s side serving as a warning about how quickly these teams can lose backing.
Rebecca believes Ted is exactly the person Richmond needs.
She wants him to create the same supportive culture that transformed Richmond’s men’s team. This time, her reasons are completely different from when she first hired Ted years earlier.
Ted is flattered, but he immediately sees the problem. Returning to London could once again pull him away from Henry, which would undermine the reason he left Richmond in the first place.
Still, Ted does not seem completely uninterested. Rebecca, Keeley, and Higgins can tell that the possibility has already started working its way through his mind.
Richmond’s Visitors Explore Kansas City
The trio’s stay also gives the episode plenty of time to reconnect with the familiar characters.
Rebecca becomes especially attached to Kansas City barbecue, although keeping the sauce away from her clothes proves much harder. Keeley joins her for a shopping trip that eventually leaves Rebecca wearing an extremely sparkly new outfit.
Their conversations also reveal some changes since the previous season. Keeley and Roy (Brett Goldstein) have become close friends, while Rebecca remains happily involved with Matthijs (Matteo van der Grijn).
Higgins takes his own unexpected detour.
He plans to visit the American Jazz Museum but ends up exploring the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum instead. There, he learns more about Black baseball players who built their own leagues after segregation kept them outside Major League Baseball.
The experience changes how Higgins thinks about Richmond’s women’s team.
The histories are not identical, something the episode itself recognizes. Still, Higgins begins to understand how institutions can deny people opportunities and resources, then use their lack of success as an excuse to keep withholding support.
For Richmond, building a women’s team cannot only be about immediate financial returns. It also means giving players a proper chance to succeed.
Ted’s Mother Pushes Him To Think About What He Wants
Ted visits his mother, Dottie (Becky Ann Baker), as she prepares to sell their family home.
Sorting through old belongings brings back memories of his father and makes Ted think about the kind of example he wants to set for Henry. Dottie notices that Ted is still conflicted about Rebecca’s offer.
Ted points out that she once wanted him to return home, only to now encourage him to consider leaving again. Dottie responds by reminding him that Henry should also get to see his father doing something he genuinely loves.
Ted does not make a decision yet, but the conversation gives him another reason to question whether staying in Kansas is really the best choice.
Ted’s Decision Looms As His Friends Prepare To Leave
After visiting his mother, Ted joins Rebecca, Keeley, and Higgins at a Kansas City Current match.
The game gives the Richmond group a closer look at women’s professional football, which connects directly to their plans for AFC Richmond’s new women’s team.
For Ted, however, the experience feels more personal. Being inside a football stadium again reminds him how much he still cares about the sport and how naturally he fits into that world.
Rebecca has already made her offer, and Ted has already tried to turn it down. But watching the Current play makes his hesitation increasingly difficult to ignore.
Eventually, Rebecca, Keeley, and Higgins return to England without the answer they wanted.
Rebecca does not force Ted to reconsider. She has already made it clear that Richmond wants him back, leaving the decision entirely in his hands.
Their departure also makes the opportunity feel more real. Once they are gone, Ted can no longer treat the offer as something happening in the background. With the decision now resting entirely on him, Ted is forced to confront just how much of Richmond he has been holding onto.
Ted’s Memories Reveal Where His Heart Still Is
The strongest evidence comes from a room Ted has repeatedly avoided entering.
Inside, Ted has kept reminders of his Richmond years. Photographs, club memorabilia, and other keepsakes fill the space, preserving a part of his life that he never truly left behind.
The room makes Ted’s problem impossible to ignore.
Kansas City is his home, but Richmond also became one. The people, experiences, and sense of purpose he found there continue to matter deeply to him.
His hesitation is not really about whether he wants to coach again. It is about whether returning to coaching would mean choosing football over Henry.
Henry Helps Ted Make His Choice
Eventually, Ted texts Michelle about the possibility of accepting Richmond’s offer and moving the family to London.
Ted: ‘Hey, crazy idea. What if we all moved to London?’
Michelle: ‘A change of scenery would be nice’
The response gives him the encouragement he needs. Then comes the episode’s small but effective twist: Henry is actually replying from Michelle’s phone because Ted forgot to charge Henry’s iPad.
Ted’s absent-minded mistake accidentally creates the conversation he has been avoiding.
Henry now knows his father is genuinely considering the job, and his response shows that returning to England does not have to mean another painful separation.
That changes everything.
Ted no longer needs to choose between being a coach and being a father. If his family can come with him, his return to Richmond becomes a new chapter rather than a reversal of the choice he made at the end of Season 3.
Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 1 Sends Ted Home Again
“Home” spends most of its runtime leading toward an answer viewers probably already expect. A fourth season centered on Richmond was never likely to keep Ted behind a grocery-store counter for long.
Still, the episode makes his return matter by focusing on why he would consider leaving Kansas after working so hard to get back there.
Ted has not become miserable at home. He simply realizes that stability alone cannot replace a sense of purpose.
At the same time, Rebecca, Keeley, and Higgins rediscover why Richmond’s women’s team deserves more than cautious financial calculations. Building it means investing in people who have often been expected to prove their worth without receiving equal opportunities.
By the end of the episode, both storylines meet in the same place.
Ted needs something meaningful to coach again, and Richmond needs someone who knows how to make overlooked players believe they belong. With Henry and Michelle apparently open to joining him in London, Ted can finally move forward without leaving his family behind.
The road back to Richmond is now open, but Ted will not be returning to recreate his old life. This time, he gets the chance to build something entirely new.
