Ted Lasso Season 4 episode 5 puts the Lady Greyhounds against Chelsea as growing pressure tests Ted, Alice, Keeley, and Rebecca on and off the pitch.
Ted Lasso Season 4 episode 5, titled “Riches of Embarrassment,” premiered on September 2 on Apple TV. The Lady Greyhounds finally face Chelsea (one of the world’s best teams) in their first major competitive test, but the biggest conflict may be developing inside Richmond’s own coaching staff.
Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) must manage Alice Chilton‘s (Tanya Reynolds) rising frustration while Keeley Jones (Juno Temple) tries to turn online attention into real supporters.
Meanwhile, Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham) gets what should be great news about Matthijs, only to discover that getting closer can make a relationship much more complicated.

Ted’s Hot Dog Photo Gets Everyone Talking in Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 5
The episode begins with Mady Song (Annelise Heywood) and Margy El Sherif (Mercedes Assad) walking through Richmond at night.
They spot Ted sitting alone and eating a hot dog. The sight looks so depressing to them that they take a photo and share it with the Lady Greyhounds’ group chat. Their reaction even pushes the pair, who had apparently separated, to reconsider being single themselves.
The next day, Keeley proudly shows Rebecca and Leslie Higgins (Jeremy Swift) a promotional video for Richmond’s upcoming match against Chelsea. The players repeatedly declare that it is their time, and the campaign quickly attracts plenty of attention online.
Keeley believes the momentum can help fill Nelson Road, the team’s home stadium, for the women’s first match there. Zelda Southport (Tracey Ullman) adds to the optimism by buying 2,000 tickets herself.
Alice Feels Left Out As Ted Gets Closer To The Team
Ted, Alice, and Coach Beard (Brendan Hunt) begin preparing their lineup for Chelsea. Once the coaches enter the locker room, however, football temporarily disappears from the conversation.
The players bombard Ted with questions after seeing the hot dog photo. They want to know whether he is lonely, whether he is dating, and what his life looks like outside Richmond.
Ted takes their curiosity lightly, but Alice does not. She has known many of these players much longer, yet they have never shown the same interest in her personal life. Her irritation begins revealing a deeper insecurity about Ted quickly becoming the emotional center of the team.
Roy’s Dating Challenge Takes An Unexpected Turn
Elsewhere, Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) prepares to travel with Richmond’s men’s team and tells Keeley that he will miss the women’s Chelsea match.
Keeley immediately asks about the ten dates she challenged him to complete. Roy says he has reached nine, which seems to make Keeley quietly optimistic about what might happen once the experiment ends. That confidence does not last.
Keeley later suggests that Roy finish his tenth date while he is away. Roy then reveals he already has, and several of his most recent dates have actually been with the same woman.
Keeley had wanted Roy to explore what else was out there before returning to her. She clearly did not expect him to find someone he genuinely wanted to keep seeing.
Matthijs Brings Rebecca Some Big News
Rebecca receives her own romantic surprise when Matthijs (Matteo van der Grijn) arrives with his 10-year-old daughter Jelka (Fleur Bremmer).
Matthijs reveals that he has accepted a job with a British airline and is moving to London. Jelka’s mother is also arranging a move, allowing Matthijs to remain close to his daughter while finally living in the same city as Rebecca.
Rebecca should be thrilled, but the news scares her. Their long-distance relationship has allowed every visit to feel special. Living close together means dealing with everyday life, and Rebecca worries that reality could expose problems that distance has kept hidden.
Ted encourages her not to let old relationship wounds convince her that something good must eventually go wrong.
Alice Takes Her Frustration Out On The Players
Ted arrives at Richmond the following day to find another sign of how attached the players have become to him. The Lady Greyhounds have bought him a pair of jeans. Alice struggles to hide how much the gesture bothers her.
During training, her frustration lands on Shannon (Shannon Hayes). When Gemma Jay (Abbie Hern) steps in to defend her teammate, Alice clashes with her as well and responds by making the whole squad run 15 laps. Ted recognizes that something beyond football is driving Alice.
He compares developing the team to preparing barbecue. Constantly interfering with something before it has time to develop can ruin the result. Sometimes a coach has to give people space, trust the process, and let growth happen. Alice hears him, but the message does not fully sink in.
Beard Finally Watches Jane’s Play in Ted Lasso Season 4 Episode 5
At the Crown & Anchor pub, Beard learns that Jane Payne (Phoebe Walsh) has turned their relationship into a one-woman stage production. After enough people mention it to him, Beard decides he needs to see the show himself. Ted goes with him.
The play presents a highly dramatized version of Jane and Beard’s troubled relationship, including her fake pregnancy and an invented encounter involving Ted. Beard eventually goes backstage to confront Jane about putting their private life onstage.
Their confrontation somehow leads them back into bed together. While waiting for Beard, Ted meets an unnamed stage manager (Charlotte Riley, Tom Hardy’s wife). She stops him from whistling backstage because of an old theater superstition, and the two share an easy conversation before separating without Ted even learning her name.
Beard soon discovers that stopping Jane will not solve his problem anyway. Her show is heading to the West End, meaning a much larger audience may soon hear a theatrical version of his personal life.
Rebecca And Matthijs Hit A Breaking Point
Rebecca begins warming to the idea of Matthijs living nearby and spends time bonding with Jelka. During a conversation over ice cream, however, Jelka reveals something Rebecca did not understand: Matthijs is moving because Jelka’s mother had apparently found work in London, not necessarily to be close to Rebecca.
Rebecca starts questioning whether she was really a major reason for his decision. When she raises the subject with Matthijs the next morning, the conversation quickly goes wrong. Matthijs is upset that Rebecca discussed sensitive family matters with his daughter and trusted Jelka’s understanding of the situation before asking him directly.
Their disagreement escalates until Matthijs suggests taking a break. Rebecca’s fear that greater closeness could damage their relationship suddenly becomes much more real.
Richmond’s Online Hype Does Not Fill Nelson Road
Match day finally arrives, but Keeley immediately notices a painful gap between social media enthusiasm and real-world support. Despite the successful campaign and strong ticket sales, Nelson Road has plenty of empty seats. Keeley had imagined a packed stadium and takes the disappointing turnout personally.
Zelda arrives with alcohol and encourages everyone not to treat the situation like a disaster. Rebecca, already heartbroken over Matthijs, joins her for a drink.
Before long, an emotional and drunk Rebecca appears during the broadcast and challenges viewers watching from home over why they did not come to support the Lady Greyhounds in person. Things look even worse on the pitch.
Chelsea shows exactly why Richmond entered the match as the underdog and takes a 2–0 lead into halftime. Alice responds by attacking the players’ performance and calling their display embarrassing. Ted finally stops her.
Ted Turns Embarrassment Into Motivation
Instead of discussing tactics during halftime, Ted brings the conversation back to the photograph of him eating alone. He explains that one image can be completely real while still failing to tell the whole story. He is divorced and single, but that does not automatically make him lonely.
Ted even admits that he may finally be ready to date again. He then turns the idea toward the team.
Richmond does not need to feel ashamed simply because Chelsea is better or because things are going badly. Trying something difficult always carries the possibility of failure, rejection, or looking foolish.
Instead of thinking about overcoming a two-goal deficit all at once, Ted gives the Lady Greyhounds a simpler target: get one goal, then worry about the next. It works. Richmond fights back to level the match at 2–2 and suddenly puts Chelsea under real pressure. But unfortunately, a late deflection gives Chelsea a 3–2 victory, ending the Lady Greyhounds’ FA Cup run.
Ted Makes A Difficult Decision About Alice
Keeley enters the locker room afterward ready to apologize for failing to fill Nelson Road. The players see things differently. The gloveless goalkeeper, Katie “Boots” Quinn (Jude Mack), points out that the crowd was still roughly twice what they usually play in front of. Keeley may not have reached the number she imagined, but she still moved the team forward.
But Alice faces a harder conversation. Ted tells her that her recent behavior reminds him of a previous coaching situation that he allowed to deteriorate for too long. (Remember Nate from the previous season?)
This time, he does not want to wait until resentment causes greater damage. Ted suspends Alice for Richmond’s next match, which is their final game of the year. He wants her to use the Christmas and New Year break to consider what kind of coach she wants to become.
The decision shocks Alice. Ted understands why she feels threatened and overlooked, but understanding those feelings does not mean allowing her to take them out on the players.
Richmond Learns That Progress Does Not Always Look Like Winning
The episode ends with Keeley and Rebecca watching Bridesmaids (2011) together after both women receive disappointing romantic news.
Keeley finally lets herself cry over Roy apparently moving forward with someone else. Rebecca admits that Matthijs has broken her heart too, and the friends comfort each other rather than spending the night alone with their problems.
“Riches of Embarrassment” gives nearly everyone something different from what they expected.
Keeley does not fill Nelson Road, but Richmond still attracts one of the biggest crowds the Lady Greyhounds have played in front of. The team does not get the result it wants against Chelsea, but fighting back from two goals down shows how much progress it has already made.
Ted also takes an important step as a leader. His compassion for Alice remains intact, but he recognizes that supporting someone does not mean ignoring behavior that hurts the team.
That makes Alice one of the biggest storylines to watch moving forward. Her suspension gives her time to reflect on Ted’s criticism, but it remains unclear whether she will return with a different approach or become even more frustrated with her role at Richmond.
Future episodes can also explore how the Lady Greyhounds respond after their toughest test yet, whether Keeley can turn growing interest into stronger support, and what happens next for Rebecca and Roy in their increasingly complicated personal lives.
Halfway through Season 4, we find that Richmond may be dealing with setbacks, but the team continues moving forward. The bigger question now is whether newcomer Alice can do the same.
