Tommy Arch explores the highs and lows of romance on his new double A-side, “Lovehearts” / “The Cold Side of the Bed.” Hailing from Whitley Bay in northeast England, Arch grew up listening obsessively to artists such as Bob Marley, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Bob Dylan, and Van Morrison. He spent more than a decade touring the UK and Europe as a drummer, bassist, and guitarist before stepping forward as a singer-songwriter.
With his raw guitar work, soulful voice, and deeply personal songwriting, Arch has built a reputation for captivating live performances. He has shared stages with artists including Cristone “Kingfish” Ingram, Damian Lewis, Eddie 9V, and Early James. He has also toured the UK with modern folk artist Beans On Toast and performed headline shows in London, Edinburgh, and beyond.
A Sound Rooted in Soul, Blues, and Folk
Arch released “The Wind That Blew South” in summer 2025. He recorded the project with Kitty and Lewis Durham of Kitty, Daisy & Lewis and at Polestar Studios, the Byker-based studio run by members of Penetration. The sessions used tape recording and analogue equipment to capture a more organic sound.
Now, Arch continues that approach with his latest release. “Lovehearts” takes the form of a heartfelt country song about the highs and pitfalls of casual love. Newcastle singer-songwriter Hels Pattison joins Arch on backing vocals, adding to the track’s classic country-duet feel.
Meanwhile, “The Cold Side of the Bed” takes a darker turn. Inspired by the dramatic blues style of Etta James, the 6/8 track confronts the loneliness and pain that follow the loss of love.
Recorded the Old-School Way
Arch produced both tracks alongside Alex Blamire, known for his work with Hector Gannet and Alex Opal. They recorded at Polestar Studios using tape and a large analogue mixing desk while keeping computer involvement to a minimum.
The sessions also brought in Ben Fitzgerald on lead guitar and Calum Howard on piano and organ. Arch drew from personal experiences, heartbreak, and the books he reads when shaping his lyrics. He keeps a notebook close by to capture ideas as they emerge.
To mark the release, Arch will perform a headline show with his band at The Cumberland Arms in Newcastle on September 11.
