Manu Grace has released her EP Oh Man, I’ve Done It Again? which explores grief, unrequited love, fickleness and infatuation.
South African songwriter, artist and producer Manu Grace has a new EP Oh Man, I’ve Done It Again?. The EP chronicles her own misadventures in 5 songs. Across this EP, she explores the cycle of accidentally falling into relationships, of feeling too much for the sake of feeling, and getting a fright when it calls for commitment.
Furthermore, this EP marks a shift in Grace’s creative process. She found herself choosing from a much larger bank of material, rather than simply releasing songs as she wrote them. As a result, she has greater control over what the project would eventually become.
This project taught me agency, and gave me the confidence to take things into my own hands and make difficult production choices. It was a process of learning to trust my ears and defend my ideas.
The songs initially took shape remotely with Robin Brink and Ross Dorkin, with Ableton projects passed between Cape Town, Berlin and London.
The focus track Can You See Me? is one of the EP’s most personal stories. According to the singer, it was written after the death of her father. It was also the first time she felt able to put words to her grief. She chose to include it as a bridge to who she was before and who she has become since.
I remember sitting on the tube, on the central line, miserable all the way there, thinking, ‘I don’t want to do this, I don’t want to do this’ on repeat. Safe to say, my memory served me well because, once I got there, it turned out I did, in fact, want to be there, and I wrote this song that day.
