Jeongyo’s memory haunts a now-famous Pio all across Europe in the sixth episode of Four Hands, Two Sonatas.
Four Hands, Two Sonatas has reached present day just in time for the show’s halfway point. In 2026, Pio is now a well-established musician. However, behind his polished facade is a desperate search, not just for a lost friend, but for redemption for his stolen valor.

The future has arrived
In present day 2026, Pio, Jaein, and their moms are having a meal together, happily discussing Pio’s success and Jaein’s appointment as Pio’s manager. Jaein playfully asks Pio when he’ll marry her, but they both play it off as a joke.
At Prague, Pio gives an interview about his performance at the Harmonie Competition nine years earlier. When the interviewer asks about Jeongyo, Pio acts like he never knew him, saying that they weren’t close and makes no mention of Jeongyo’s help during the competition.
Back in Korea, Jihye is appointed a member of the Music Division of the National Steering Committee. She watches the auditions of young musicians for a gifted school where Hyunsoo is teaching. He immediately identifies a potential candidate, but Jihye shoots him down, citing familiar criticisms, similar to what she said about Jeongyo years ago.
Hyunsoo and Jihye argue after the meeting, their argument revealing that they hadn’t spoken in a long time. Hyunsoo coldly tells Jihye that she brought this on herself and walks away.
Searching for Jeongyo
After the interview, Pio gets a call from Martin Vogel, a man who has spent the last five years helping Pio find out what happened to Jeongyo. Pio goes to Romania to follow up on a lead, telling Jaein he can’t come to his events. They talk to several people, but it goes nowhere.
Back in Prague, Pio sees Jeongyo in the audience at performances and in crowds. Distraught at another false lead, he drinks heavily after a performance. Jaein comes to pick him up and bring him back to the hotel, where Pio drunkenly tells her that she’s the only person he can trust. She confesses that all the times she told him she liked him, she was being honest, but Pio is already asleep.
Pio gets another message from Vogel, saying that the man who kidnapped Jeongyo is now released from prison. They show up at his headquarters in Moldova, which is swarming with his fellow mercenaries, and interrogate him. The man says Jeongyo is dead, as he killed Jeongyo when he put up too much of a fight.
Pio demands for more information and threatens violence, which causes the man to ask for six million lei in exchange. He acquires the money, but he and Vogel return to the headquarters to find out that the man has been killed in a fight.
The challenge of moving on
Though Vogel tells him to let Jeongyo go now that they know what happened, Pio feels so terrible that he gets a fever while in Moldova. Again, Jaein comes to take care of him. Pio tells her everything, wracked with guilt at the thought that he had taken Jeongyo’s place and it’s now impossible to make things right. Jaein encourages him to move on and become a great pianist in Jeongyo’s place. She comforts him and kisses him.
Pio returns to Korea, seemingly getting along with his mother far better than he used to. However, his grandfather is still quite cold to him. No longer a hyperfocused maestro, Seungwoon now tends to his plants. We also learn that Director Seonju moved out of the Kang house five years ago, as Jihye lashes out at a maid for mistakenly leaving one of Seonju’s suits in Jihye’s closet.
Facing his grief
Pio is going on a tour across Korea to promote his new album. However, he cannot get Jeongyo’s memory out of his head and sees him everywhere, which leads to him having a breakdown during a performance.
Pio continues to spiral, refusing to eat or meet anyone. He confronts Hyunsoo about having them perform the same piece, projecting his own feelings of inadequacy. Hyunsoo again avoids the question, but tells Pio that he cherished him and Jeongyo equally as students.
Pio eventually sees a doctor who advises him to take time to face his grief. He goes to Brno, a city in the Czech Republic, where he finds himself in the audience for a conducting competition. One of the competitors is named Luca Domenico, but when Pio looks up at the sound of a familiar piece, the person conducting is unmistakably Choi Jeongyo.
Thoughts and What To Expect Next on Four Hands, Two Sonatas
Despite the missing persons plotline, the most unbelievable thing about this episode is that Pio and Jihye’s relationship apparently survived all those years of pressure and expectations. However, it is indeed surprising how long toxic familial relationships can last. Hopefully, Pio comes to his senses sooner rather than later.
Next episode, Pio and Jeongyo (or rather, Luca?) meet again, and it seems like the news of Jeongyo’s return will spread quickly. There is also the mysterious detail of what happened to Seonju. With luck, the next episode will bring us more answers than questions.
