A Troubling Past Resurfaces in Doctor X: Mafia in White Episode 3

Episode 3 of Doctor X: Mafia in White begins with Dr. Bae Hong-gon informing Dr. Do Yoon-sik about a patient who underwent the same unusual surgical procedure Su-jeong used on Park Gwang-cheol. The patient died two months after the operation. Dr. Bae suspects that Su-jeong performed the procedure and warns that her actions could damage Guseo University Medical Centre’s (GUMC) reputation.

Su-jeong

A flashback then reveals a glimpse of Su-jeong’s past. During the fire at White Wings Medical Corps, she re-entered the burning building to rescue a young boy. Meanwhile, Dr. Bae, Dr. Do, and Dr. Ma Sung-gyu bring their concerns to Director Bu Seung-gwon. They hope he will dismiss Su-jeong, but he refuses. Instead, Director Bu suggests keeping her at GUMC so she can answer for any consequences of her actions.

The doctors soon learn that Su-jeong has reported to the emergency room. She arrives with a patient she rescued from an accident and volunteers to donate blood to help the victims. After donating, she rests on a bed and pretends to remain asleep when the senior doctors arrive looking for her.

The Cost of a Doctor’s Failure

While searching for Su-jeong, Director Bu encounters Dr. Kim Seong-jin, who reminds him of a tragic incident involving EMT Seo Jin-yeong. The overworked emergency medical technician died after the hospital failed to provide timely surgical treatment.

Director Bu dismisses Seong-jin’s concerns and suggests using Su-jeong to handle the emergency room’s needs. Seong-jin objects to the decision, but Tae-kyeong later checks on Su-jeong and discovers that she has been awake the entire time.

Elsewhere, Tae-kyeong learns more about Jin-yeong’s death. Seong-jin had found the EMT unconscious at his desk after a long shift. He rushed Jin-yeong into surgery and discovered an aneurysm that required immediate treatment. However, Dr. Bae refused to perform the complicated procedure because he believed he could not save the patient.

Sung-gyu defends Dr. Bae’s decision. He argues that attempting an operation beyond a surgeon’s abilities could put a patient at even greater risk. Tae-kyeong disagrees, insisting that doctors should explore every possible way to save a life.

Su-jeong joins the discussion and challenges their reasoning. She points out that Jin-yeong was fortunate to reach a hospital at all, since many patients with aneurysms never make it to the emergency room. Dr. Jo Won-jin eventually ends the argument and sends Sung-gyu to assist Dr. Bae with surgery. She also reprimands Su-jeong and Tae-kyeong for distracting the doctors.

Tae-kyeong

Later, Hee-sook visits Su-jeong in the cafeteria and scolds her for spending time in the emergency room instead of earning money through her contract. She also introduces herself to Tae-kyeong as Su-jeong’s agent. Their conversation eventually returns to Jin-yeong’s tragic case.

Another Patient Faces a Life-or-Death Emergency

The following morning, Tae-kyeong and Seong-jin find Su-jeong sleeping in an emergency room bed. They wake her, but she realizes that her shift has not started and goes straight back to sleep. Meanwhile, Tae-kyeong questions why GUMC refuses to hire more doctors who can perform craniotomies. The hospital has enough beds to accommodate additional patients, yet it lacks surgeons with the necessary expertise. Jin-yeong’s death highlights the consequences of this shortage.

Doctor X

Hee-sook shares similar concerns with her friends. She argues that GUMC prioritizes profit over patient care and prefers hiring doctors for simpler procedures rather than investing in highly skilled specialists.

Later, Seong-jin discovers that a contract cleaner has collapsed inside the emergency room. He immediately orders the staff to take her for an MRI examination. Remembering Jin-yeong’s death, he grows increasingly anxious when doctors confirm that the cleaner has suffered a ruptured aneurysm.

The senior doctors gather to discuss the case. Since none of them feels qualified to perform the necessary operation, they consider transferring the patient to another hospital. Sun-ae questions the decision, pointing out the consequences of sending away another patient without attempting treatment.

Doctor X

Seong-jin asks Director Bu to perform the surgery, but he hesitates. Tae-kyeong then arrives with news that Won-jin has authorized Su-jeong to operate.

Director Bu, Dr. Do, Dr. Bae, Sun-ae, and Sung-gyu rush to the operating room. They fear that Su-jeong may be the mysterious Doctor X mentioned in the news. Hee-sook also arrives and presents documents confirming Su-jeong’s neurosurgical qualifications.

Doctor X Proves Her Worth

Despite Dr. Do’s objections, Su-jeong proceeds with the operation. Seong-jin wonders whether she anticipated the cleaner’s collapse and deliberately stayed in the emergency room in case an opportunity arose.

The staff watch in disbelief as Su-jeong successfully completes the difficult procedure. Her performance once again exposes the gap between her surgical abilities and the limitations of GUMC’s senior doctors.

However, her success does not end the controversy. The senior staff convene a meeting to discuss her decision to perform surgery outside the usual scope of her freelance contract. Seong-jin defends Su-jeong and argues that she could have saved Jin-yeong if she had worked at GUMC a year earlier. Sun-ae recognizes Seong-jin as the whistleblower who exposed the hospital’s role in Jin-yeong’s death. She accuses him of betraying the institution.

Su-jeong

The confrontation grows heated as Dr. Bae defends his refusal to operate on Jin-yeong. Frustrated by the doctors’ attempts to portray themselves as victims, Su-jeong reminds them of their responsibility to every patient, including the people who work at the hospital.

The senior doctors demand that Director Bu fire her. Instead, he turns on them and calls them cowards for refusing to accept responsibility for their mistakes.

Outside the meeting room, Sung-gyu and Tae-kyeong apologize to each other for their earlier argument. Meanwhile, Director Bu holds a press conference to acknowledge GUMC’s failure in Jin-yeong’s case. He apologizes to the EMT’s family and promises that the hospital will treat its employees with the same care it gives its patients.

Elsewhere, Dr. Do tells Dr. Bae that he knows who leaked the video about Jin-yeong’s death. He reveals that Dr. Bae, rather than Seong-jin, was responsible.

Su-jeong’s Future at GUMC Remains Uncertain

The next day, Hee-sook discusses increasing Su-jeong’s contract rates after her recent surgeries. Their conversation takes an unexpected turn when Dr. Do introduces Dr. Na Dae-il as GUMC’s new general surgeon. Director Bu then puts Su-jeong’s contract on hold, leaving her position at the hospital uncertain.

The episode ends with another challenge for Doctor X. Although she has saved two patients and exposed the hospital’s failures, GUMC’s internal politics continue to threaten her future.

Episode 3 delivers an emotionally charged story that exposes the consequences of GUMC’s negligence and internal politics. Su-jeong’s successful surgery highlights her exceptional abilities while challenging the doctors’ reluctance to take responsibility. The growing mystery surrounding Doctor X adds intrigue, while the suspension of her contract sets up another compelling conflict.
