Based in Miami, Florida, the indie rock trio—Marco Rivero Ochoa on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Leo Cattani on keyboard, and Adam Perez on drums—continue to shape a sound that refuses to sit neatly in one genre. They mix indie rock with surf, jazz, funk, and bossa nova. Mustard Service also draw from Cuban, Uruguayan, Argentinian, and Mexican music.
Produced by Chad Copelin, known for his work with Broncho and Wildorado, Paradise takes a more personal approach to songwriting. Marco wrote much of the record while dealing with the deaths of his grandparents, his cat, and close friends. These experiences pushed him to confront questions about mortality and purpose.
Finding Meaning in the Moment
Rather than focus solely on grief, Paradise asks listeners to consider what matters while they still have the chance. Marco describes the album as an invitation to pause and reflect instead of moving through life on autopilot.
Despite its heavier themes, the album never loses the playful energy that defines Mustard Service. Infectious grooves, bright instrumentation, and warm melodies create a striking contrast with lyrics about memory, regret, reconciliation, and loss. Moreover, the band uses vivid characters and stories to explore these ideas.
The Spanish-language single “Aerolineas Mostaza” follows two former lovers who unexpectedly cross paths, forcing them to confront unresolved feelings and the possibility of a final goodbye. Meanwhile, “Who Knew Your Body” takes a darker and more satirical route. The song examines romantic obsession and the danger of making another person the centre of your identity.
“Psalm 2” serves as one of the album’s most ambitious moments. The song follows a dying soldier who finds peace by seeing humanity as part of one shared existence. Inspired by near-death experiences, it explores compassion, love, and interconnectedness.
Copelin’s return also strengthened the band’s creative process. Marco says watching the producer actively contribute to their songs gave the group renewed motivation.
With hundreds of millions of streams and major live milestones—including opening for Bombay Bicycle Club and selling out Los Angeles’ El Rey Theatre—Mustard Service continue to expand their reach.
