Gregory Douglass unveils “Bespoke,” a deeply personal single exploring queer love, desire, identity, and self-acceptance ahead of his album AMATEUR.
Singer-songwriter Gregory Douglass introduces his new single, “Bespoke,” as the first preview of his upcoming album, AMATEUR. The intimate track examines love, identity, desire, and the complicated emotions that can shape queer relationships.
“Bespoke” tells the story of a relationship that turned its subject into both a muse and a mirror. Douglass explores the beauty and pain of queer connection while confronting internalized shame. Through the song, he moves toward greater emotional clarity, compassion, and self-acceptance.
The track blends haunting piano, expressive strings, and soulful vocals. Its understated chamber-pop sound recalls the emotional intimacy of Tori Amos, the elegance of Rufus Wainwright, and the warmth of Bedouine.
A New Chapter Built on Vulnerability
AMATEUR marks Douglass’ first major collection of original material in nearly a decade. The album explores love, fantasy, grief, identity, and healing through a stripped-back musical approach. Piano, voice, strings, and bass form its foundation, allowing the songwriting to remain at the center.
Douglass developed the project after stepping away from the demanding cycle of touring and releasing music. After more than two decades in the independent music scene, he began reconsidering his definition of success. His experiences eventually shaped an album rooted in honesty rather than industry expectations.
Throughout his 25-year career, Douglass has independently released ten studio albums. He has also worked with international producers and performed alongside artists such as Grace Potter, Jason Mraz, Regina Spektor, Patty Griffin, They Might Be Giants, and Anaïs Mitchell. Moreover, his music has earned recognition from NPR and Out Magazine. His song “Alibis” also appeared in the Netflix series The Rain in 2019.
Douglass drew further inspiration from his life in Palm Springs, California. The city’s queer community encouraged him to reconsider long-held ideas about intimacy, authenticity, and self-worth.
Rather than release AMATEUR all at once, Douglass will unveil singles throughout 2026. The full album will arrive in November, continuing his long-standing commitment to independence, patience, and artistic honesty.
