What is the Girigo App and its curse in If Wishes Could Kill?

Girigo’s curse works through a deadly wish system in the K-drama If Wishes Could Kill. The app grants any wish once a user uploads a video stating their wish along with their name and birthdate. However, every granted wish triggers a 24-hour countdown. When the timer ends, the wishmaker dies.

The app follows strict and cruel rules. A wish can only activate through a recorded submission. Once fulfilled, the user cannot escape the consequence. In addition, the countdown creates constant pressure, turning each wish into a life-or-death gamble.

The story begins when Hyeon-wook uses Girigo to wish for a perfect math score. He succeeds, which convinces his friends Se-ah, Geon-woo, Na-ri, and Ha-joon to try the app. However, they quickly learn the true cost when Hyeon-wook dies violently in front of them, controlled by an unseen force.

Moreover, the curse contains a loophole: the countdown stops if another person makes a wish. Because of this loophole, users can delay their death by passing the curse to someone else. As a result, Girigo behaves like a deadly chain reaction, spreading through manipulation and fear.

Additionally, only active wishmakers can see the ghosts tied to the app, making them vulnerable to psychological tricks. The curse exploits this weakness by sending fake messages and calls. These illusions often target emotions and relationships, pushing users to make fatal decisions.

Who are Do Hye-rung and Kim Si-won?

Kim Si-won and Do Hye-rung form the tragic origin of the Girigo app’s curse in If Wishes Could Kill. Their story begins years before the main events at the same school.

Si-won, a gifted tech student, hides a painful home life. She struggles with shame over her mother, a local shaman, blaming her for her father’s death. Furthermore, she avoids going home and often sleeps in an abandoned warehouse. Only her close friend Hye-rung knows the truth about her family.

Si-won also joins a school app coding challenge with popular students, including Hye-rung’s crush, Gi-tae. One group member suggests building a wish-making app inspired by shamanism. Si-won agrees, but reluctantly, as she fears exposure and wants to silence any connection to her mother.

Meanwhile, Hye-rung maintains contact with Si-won’s mother, who struggles with alcoholism. Si-won discovers this and reacts with anger and betrayal. She then activates the app in a cruel way. She spreads a video of Hye-rung publicly wishing for Gi-tae’s love.

As a result, Gi-tae humiliates and assaults Hye-rung. Si-won encourages this outcome, deepening the betrayal. In response, Hye-rung turns to the app in despair. She wishes for the death of both Si-won and Gi-tae, then takes her own life. The wish comes true.

However, Si-won makes one final wish before dying. That act corrupts the app completely. Her lingering spirit becomes the source of Girigo’s ongoing curse. Hye-rung also remains trapped within its power. Together, they anchor the app’s deadly influence over every future user.

What are the wishes made in If Wishes Could Kill?

What happened to Se-ah and Na-ri in the second realm?

Se-ah initially believes she can end the curse by destroying Hye-ryeong’s phone. Furthermore, she soon realizes the true source of the curse lies with Si-won. Ha-sal then steps in and distracts Si-won’s spirit to create an opening.

Se-ah takes the opportunity and locates Si-won’s phone. She uses a spiritual tool to destroy it. As a result, the curse loses its hold on the physical world, and immediate danger ends.

However, the conflict continues in the spiritual realm. Na-ri, overwhelmed by anger, confronts Se-ah. Se-ah tries to calm her and stop the confrontation. Moreover, she attempts to reason with her friend. Despite this, tension escalates into a violent struggle. In the end, Na-ri dies during the fight.

Who survived the curse?

In the spirit world, Na-ri turns on Se-ah and attempts to kill her. Se-ah responds in self-defense. Moreover, she overpowers Na-ri and ends the fight by killing her. This moment marks one of the series’ most painful turning points. It shows how deeply the curse has corrupted their relationships.

After the confrontation, Se-ah continues her search. She locates Si-won’s phone at last. She then destroys it using one of Ha-sal’s arrows. As a result, the curse finally breaks. Si-won and Hye-rung are freed and can move on.

However, the ending does not fully resolve in happiness. Hyeon-wook and Na-ri remain dead. Still, Se-ah, Geon-woo, and Ha-joon survive. In addition, Bang Ui also survives despite serious injuries sustained while protecting the group.

In the final scene of If Wishes Could Kill (2026, Season 1), the survivors gather for a shared meal at Ha-sal and Bang Ui’s home. They perform a ceremony for Hyeon-wook. They honor his spirit and help him pass on peacefully.

Furthermore, the series uses disturbing visuals and intense scenes that linger in your mind long after watching. The story moves with a gripping pace that avoids dragging, even during quieter moments.

In addition, If Wishes Could Kill builds suspense through unpredictable twists and emotional stakes. Each episode pushes the characters deeper into danger, which keeps the pressure high. Moreover, the atmosphere stays dark and immersive throughout, making it hard to look away. This is not a dull watch. It pulls you in and refuses to let go.
