Rue’s debt to Laurie turns into a dangerous deal in Euphoria Season 3 Episode 1

Euphoria Season 3 episode 1 opens five years after high school in Chihuahua. Rue is far from stability. She is in Mexico and involved in drug running across the border into California as she tries to settle her debts.

Later, she travels through Texas and arrives at a farm. There, she uses the alias “Ruby” and poses as a college reporter. The family she meets is deeply religious and welcoming. Their eldest daughter, Daisy, even offers Rue a ride to the bus depot. From there, Rue eventually reaches California.

About 11 minutes into the episode, the story reveals what led her there. After high school, Rue worked in a smoke shop. Laurie later approached her during that time.

Rue still owes Laurie money from the suitcase and pills incident in Season 2. The original debt was 10,000 dollars. However, 20% monthly interest caused it to balloon over time. It reportedly grows to around 43 million dollars. Faced with no way out, Rue agrees to become a drug mule. Laurie reduces the demand and agrees to settle for 100,000 dollars instead.

To transport the drugs, Rue swallows ballooned packets. She forces them down to avoid detection. This method is known as body packing. It carries extreme risk. If a packet breaks inside her body, it could kill her.

Rue does not work alone. She brings Faye into the operation. Together, they continue the dangerous smuggling process that moves fentanyl into the United States.

Everyone else’s split paths

After the raid on Fezco’s house last season, everything shifts. Ash dies during the chaos. Later, Laurie expands her operation and partners with her cousin Harley and his son Wayne. Together, they build a tight and structured drug network.

Over the next two years, Rue becomes deeply involved in the system. Furthermore, she completes more than a dozen runs. She eventually earns a reputation as their most reliable mule.

In between jobs, Rue also drives for Uber to earn extra money. At times, she stays with Lexi and sleeps on her couch. However, tension grows between them. Lexi eventually confronts Rue and criticizes her choices, especially around religion and judgment.

Rue later turns to Ali for guidance. She asks him about the Bible. She searches for meaning and believes faith might give her direction. Ali keeps his answer simple. He tells her she either commits to faith or she does not. Rue takes this seriously and begins treating the text as absolute truth.

To add, Rue spends long hours on the road. She listens to audiobooks while working both as a mule and a driver. She tries to fill the silence with something stable.

Elsewhere, Lexi distances herself from Fezco. After the raid, authorities arrest him. He receives a 30-year prison sentence. Lexi moves forward in a completely different world. She now works on a soap production in Hollywood.

In contrast, Cassie heads in another direction. She settles into a suburban life but struggles with attention and validation. She attempts to build TikTok fame by using provocative content. In fact, she even dresses as a dog to attract viewers.

Cassie works with a housekeeper named Juana, who also helps film her content. Meanwhile, Nate disapproves of Cassie’s behavior. He insults her and accuses her of degrading herself. He insists he is focused on the real world while she performs for attention online.

Rue steps into a riskier world

Nate climbs the ladder in his father’s old business. He tells Cassie they have more than enough money. However, his confidence masks pressure. He struggles to grow the operation in Southern California. The environment stays competitive and unstable.

Furthermore, Cassie pushes her own plans forward. She wants to expand into OnlyFans and sell explicit content. She believes it will bring her fast success. However, she also pushes harder for a lavish wedding, which adds tension between her and Nate in Euphoria Season 3 episode 1.

Elsewhere, Maddy builds a career in talent management. She represents influencers and several rising actors. One of them is Dylan Reid, the lead star of LA Nights. Dylan takes an interest in Lexi, which complicates things further.

Back with Rue, Laurie summons her again. Laurie assigns her a new task involving a major buyer named Alamo Brown. Rue must deliver a package directly to him.

Later, Rue arrives at Alamo’s location. She asks to use the bathroom and goes upstairs and finds a group of women. She gets distracted and joins them as they dance.

That decision backfires. Alamo confronts her and calls her disrespectful. Still, the situation shifts quickly. They talk and find unexpected common ground. Alamo admits he profits from exploiting women in the industry.

Alamo owns five strip clubs in California. He offers Rue a chance to work with him. Rue shows interest in the opportunity. However, his right-hand man, Bishop, does not approve. He questions her presence and pushes back against the idea.

That night, Cassie brings up OnlyFans to Nate. He immediately assumes she means pornography and reacts against it. He refuses to let her sell her body online. However, Cassie pushes back. She tells him she refuses to accept a “low-status” wedding. She stays firm and challenges his control. Eventually, Nate gives in and allows her to try.

Elsewhere in Euphoria Season 3 episode 1, chaos breaks out at Alamo’s place. One of the women, Tish, overdoses. The drugs Rue delivered turn out to be laced with fentanyl. Alamo reacts fast and confronts Rue. He demands answers and questions her role in the supply chain.

Rue tries to explain herself. She talks her way through the situation and offers to help instead of hiding from it. Alamo listens but does not trust her yet. He decides to test her faith and fear.

Later, he brings Rue outside. He places a green apple on her head. Then he fires a gun and shoots the apple instead of her. Rue survives the test and exhales in relief.

Euphoria Season 3 episode 1 steps into another chapter of Rue’s life and her friends. Their paths reflect the aftermath of what happened in high school. However, the episode still delivers a sharp dose of reality at times.
