Tae-seo Returns to His Grandparents’ Town in Still Shining Episode 1

Still Shining episode 1 opens in July 2014 as Yeon Tae-seo leaves a study center in Seoul. Soon after, his aunt brings his younger brother Hui-seo to the train station. The brothers then travel together to their grandparents’ hometown outside the city. Because Hui-seo has a fractured leg, Tae-seo patiently carries him throughout the journey.

Once they arrive, Hui-seo asks their grandfather, Chang-sik, to drop Tae-seo off at the local school. At school, Tae-seo explains their situation to the teacher. He shares that he and Hui-seo transferred to Seoul after moving in with their aunt, but Hui-seo experienced bullying there. As a result, the brothers will stay with their grandparents until they graduate.

The teacher quickly notices Tae-seo’s strong academic record. Because of this, he encourages Tae-seo to prepare for the PSATs during the summer break. He also tells Tae-seo to collect school uniforms from a donation box near the library. At the same time, he briefly mentions another student, Mo Eun-a, who has been studying there on her own before the exams.

Later, Tae-seo visits the library to pick up the uniforms. While there, he spots Eun-a quietly studying but chooses not to approach her. After finishing the errand, he returns home, where Chang-sik informs him that his study table delivery has been delayed. To avoid distractions the next day, Tae-seo decides to study at the library instead.

At the library, he runs into Eun-a again. However, her loud and talkative personality quickly gets on his nerves. Despite this, Tae-seo keeps his thoughts to himself. During lunch break, Eun-a invites him to eat ramen in the break room. She fills the conversation with endless chatter while Tae-seo mostly listens in silence.

Growing Closer Through Summer Days

Later that evening, Eun-a locks the library before heading home. Before leaving, Tae-seo tells her that he plans to study at home from now on. As Eun-a cycles away and Tae-seo walks toward the bus stop, he notices her catching fireflies nearby. The moment triggers a memory of a past visit to the village with his parents. Back then, Hui-seo happily caught fireflies with Eun-a while Tae-seo walked home with their parents.

The next morning, Tae-seo waits outside the library for Eun-a to unlock the door. While they chat, he suggests hiding the key so he can enter if she arrives late. However, Eun-a refuses because she feels responsible for the library. Despite the intense summer heat, the two continue studying there together.

That evening, Tae-seo mentions that he brought a bicycle so they could ride home together. However, Eun-a reveals that she took the bus that day. Soon after, the conversation turns playful, and they begin racing their bicycles. Tae-seo reaches the finish line first but notices Eun-a’s disappointment. Because of this, he slows down and lets her win.

Over the next few weeks, Tae-seo and Eun-a spend more time together. As the days pass, their friendship gradually grows into something deeper. Meanwhile, Eun-a returns home one evening and finds her father, Mo Seon-gyu, entertaining international guests with his partner, Park So-hyeon. Later that night, Seon-gyu cooks dinner for her. During their meal, Eun-a scolds him for drinking too much and asks about his girlfriend. Seon-gyu brushes it off and claims So-hyeon is busy hosting the guests, so Eun-a simply accepts his explanation.

The following morning, heavy rain wakes Eun-a. She prepares a hangover drink for her father and suddenly remembers that Tae-seo must be waiting at the library. In a hurry, she cycles to the bus stop to hand him the key. She rushes so quickly that she leaves one slipper behind. Tae-seo notices it but quietly accepts the key and promises to wait for her later.

After arriving at the library, Tae-seo places drinks in the fridge so they can share them later. When Eun-a finally arrives, she confesses that she had been worried about her father earlier that morning. She also admits that she feels calmer whenever she looks at Tae-seo. To comfort her, he sits across from her while they continue studying together.

However, the calm moment does not last long. Later, Eun-a sends a message to So-hyeon but grows upset after learning that she will not visit her father. Worried about the situation, Eun-a suddenly rushes home, leaving Tae-seo alone in the library.

Unable to focus on his studies, Tae-seo decides to visit Eun-a’s house. However, his plan changes when his grandmother, Hwa-soon, notices him on the way and invites him to join her and a friend for lunch. Later that night, Tae-seo wonders if Eun-a will return to the library the next day. The following morning, he unlocks the door and waits inside. When he hears her footsteps approaching, relief immediately shows on his face.

While studying together, Eun-a suddenly discovers several nametags from girls in Tae-seo’s former class in Seoul. Embarrassed, Tae-seo quickly explains that he had no idea they slipped the tags into his bag as farewell gifts. However, Eun-a playfully refuses to believe him and continues teasing him about it.

During lunch, Tae-seo brings up the previous day and asks why she rushed home so suddenly. In response, Eun-a shares a difficult truth about her family. She explains that her father struggles with anxiety and depression and once attempted to end his life. Because of this, she often worries whenever he is left alone. She also mentions that he had been improving recently after starting a new relationship.

Later in Still Shining episode 1, their conversation shifts to the future. Tae-seo admits that he hopes to attend a university far from home. He believes distance will help him support his grandparents and younger brother without feeling burdened by constant pressure. Meanwhile, Eun-a realises her priorities are different. Instead of moving to Seoul, she wants to stay close to home so she can be there for her father if he ever needs her.

An Unexpected Distance

As they reflect on the month they spent studying together, Tae-seo opens up about his responsibilities. He explains that after their parents’ death, he feels determined to become the family’s breadwinner. Meanwhile, Eun-a shares her passion for drawing and wonders if she could pursue it in the future. Tae-seo encourages her and assures her that she has real talent. However, the conversation turns awkward when Eun-a suddenly admits that she likes him, catching them both off guard.

Later that night, they ride their bicycles home and prepare for the first day of school. The following morning, their teacher asks Tae-seo to keep studying in the library for an elective class the school does not offer. As the months pass, Tae-seo and Eun-a quietly focus on their studies while maintaining their routine at the library.

Meanwhile, Tae-seo takes Hui-seo to the hospital to remove his leg cast. Although Hui-seo worries that he might never walk properly again, he hides his fears from their grandfather. At the same time, Tae-seo begins to notice occasional problems with his hearing. However, he brushes off the issue and continues with his daily life.

About a month later, Eun-a unexpectedly runs into Tae-seo while they are both traveling to Seoul. Delighted by the chance meeting, she suggests they spend time together in the city. However, Tae-seo declines and says he has urgent business to attend to. Instead, he heads to an admissions seminar at Hanguk University.

Meanwhile, Eun-a visits So-hyeon at her apartment. To her shock, she finds So-hyeon with another man and immediately assumes she is betraying her father. Eun-a confronts her, but So-hyeon calmly explains that she and Seon-gyu are not officially in a relationship. She adds that Eun-a’s father has never wanted to clearly define what they are. Frustrated and with no reason to stay in Seoul, Eun-a quietly returns to the train station.

The Start of a New Romance

While in Seoul, Tae-seo meets a friend who presents him with an opportunity. The friend offers him a tutoring job at his father’s study center, which will begin the following February before university starts. Soon after, Tae-seo also visits a doctor to check the hearing problems he has been experiencing. The doctor explains that the symptoms are likely caused by stress and should only appear occasionally.

During the consultation, Tae-seo reflects on the traumatic accident that changed his family’s life. He recalls the car crash that killed their parents while they were out shopping with Hui-seo. The same accident also left Hui-seo with a serious leg injury. Tae-seo admits that his hearing issues began shortly after that incident, which still weighs heavily on his mind.

As her emotions spill over, she breaks down in tears. Realizing how much he has hurt her, Tae-seo quickly heads to the train station where she is waiting.

He soon finds Eun-a standing near the Han River. Without hesitation, the two board the train and travel home together. During the ride, they finally speak honestly about their feelings. Both admit that being together makes them feel calmer and less alone.

As the moment deepens, Eun-a suggests that they stay together forever. Tae-seo agrees without hesitation. The episode then closes with Tae-seo gently holding Eun-a’s hand, marking the beginning of their relationship.
