YAO returns with “FOR OKINAWA,” a powerful collaboration that explores Okinawa’s history, culture, heritage, and hopes for peace through music.
Japanese cross-genre collective YAO brings together some of the country’s most distinctive musical voices. The group features hip-hop artist Awich, rapper CHICO CARLITO, rock band ONE OK ROCK, and genre-defying band Paledusk. Now, YAO returns with its second single, “FOR OKINAWA.”
The track grew from conversations among the members during the creative process. Through these discussions, they explored Okinawa’s history, culture, and the wounds that still shape its people.

Okinawa natives Awich and CHICO CARLITO brought personal stories of their homeland to the group. They shared the realities faced by communities that continue to live with the weight of Okinawa’s past. Their experiences also resonated with the other members.
Among them, Tokyo-born Taka of ONE OK ROCK developed a deeper connection to their message. Together, the artists found common ground in their hope for peace and their commitment to protecting Okinawa’s cultural heritage.
Different Roots, One Message
That shared purpose eventually became the heart of “FOR OKINAWA.” As YAO considered the message they wanted to communicate, the members looked beyond Japan and toward a wider global audience.
Taka also pushed himself creatively while developing the song. He set out to write a melody unlike anything he had created before. The result combines the members’ individual influences, experiences, and cultural roots into one emotionally charged track.
Moreover, the song reflects YAO’s ability to bring artists from vastly different musical worlds together. Rather than fitting into a single genre, the collective builds its own sound from the contrast between its members.
More From YAO
With “FOR OKINAWA,” YAO continues to show what can happen when artists unite around a shared purpose. The single transforms personal experiences and cultural history into a collective statement.
Fans can also look forward to the song’s upcoming music video. The visual will expand YAO’s world and further tell the story behind “FOR OKINAWA.”
