London, Ontario folk artist Willem James Cowan turns the aftermath of a breakup into something surprisingly hopeful with “Not For You, Not For Us.” The upbeat folk-rock single pairs warm acoustic instrumentation with subtle electronic elements. At the center, Cowan uses vivid storytelling to explore the line between lived experience and imagined narratives.
The song began soon after the end of a long-term relationship. At the time, Cowan returned home and tried to make sense of the emotions that followed. Instead of writing a direct account of the breakup, he created a fictional story about the aftermath of a toxic relationship. The story may be fictional, but its emotions come from a real place.
“I was trying to understand why I made the choices I made and explain myself through songwriting,” Cowan says. He explains that he invented most of the relationship details while drawing from personal experiences and emotions.
When Fiction Tells the Truth
Cowan also used the song’s title to draw a line between the story and his own life. “Not For You, Not For Us” does not come from a lyric. Instead, it works as a disclaimer. The title reminds listeners that the song’s emotional core is authentic, even if its narrative is not autobiographical.
Cowan typically writes directly about himself. This time, he wanted to avoid creating the wrong impression about the relationship that inspired the song. He even asked audiences for alternative title ideas during his live shows. None of them felt as fitting as the original.
I wanted to make sure that people, mainly the person who inspired this song, knew that I’m not trying to make up lies about our relationship.
Expanding His Folk Sound
Musically, Cowan takes his folk roots in a slightly different direction. He initially drew inspiration from Buck Meek’s “Haunted Mountain” and its loose, effortless momentum. From there, he built a sound that still feels intimate but carries more movement.
He layers programmed hi-hats, electronic percussion, and arpeggiated textures beneath the acoustic arrangement. These elements add energy without overpowering the organic foundation of the track.
“Not For You, Not For Us” will serve as the final preview of Cowan’s upcoming album, What Should Happen Next?, which arrives September 18. The record explores loss, transition, new beginnings, and the uncertainty that comes with starting over.
Earlier singles have focused on grief and displacement. With “Not For You, Not For Us,” Cowan shifts his attention toward what comes next. The song does not erase the past. Instead, it finds a reason to keep moving forward.
