The long wait is finally over! Soul Asylum finally releases a live performance of “What Will Become of Me” and announces a worldwide tour.
Soul Asylum finally releases “What Will Become of Me,” a long-awaited live recording that fans have followed since 1995. The song first appeared in their live sets that year and quickly built a strong cult following. However, the band never officially released it until now.

At the same time, Soul Asylum announces a major worldwide tour. The run will take them across North America, South America, and other international stops. As a result, the band brings its signature live energy back to global stages.
In addition, the announcement builds anticipation for their upcoming live album MPLS Unplugged, set for release later this summer via Blue Élan Records.

MPLS Unplugged
Recorded at Minneapolis’ historic State Theatre on April 20, 2023, MPLS Unplugged revisits the spirit of the band’s 1993 MTV Unplugged era. In fact, the session took place nearly 30 years to the day after that iconic performance. This timing adds a strong sense of reflection and continuity to the project.
Rather than recreating the past, the band uses this live recording to highlight how their sound has evolved. At the same time, they stay connected to the emotional core that has defined their music for decades. The result feels raw, intimate, and deeply rooted in their history.
Frontman Dave Pirner leads the lineup alongside guitarist Ryan Smith, bassist Jeremy Tapparo, and drummer Michael Bland. In addition, keyboardist Ivan Neville returns, reconnecting directly to the band’s original 1993 Unplugged era. The performance also features the STRINGenius string quartet and the Robert Robinson Gospel Singers, adding rich, layered depth to the arrangements.
“What Will Become of Me” Finally Surfaces
Among the standout moments on MPLS Unplugged, “What Will Become of Me” holds special significance. The band has performed it live since 1995, yet fans have never heard an official recording until now.
Alongside “Farmer John,” it stands as one of two previously unreleased live tracks on the album. As a result, MPLS Unplugged gives listeners a rare chance to experience a deeper part of the band’s live legacy.
More than 40 years into their career, Soul Asylum continues to evolve without losing their roots. With MPLS Unplugged and the upcoming worldwide tour, the band reinforces its identity as a powerful live act. At the same time, they reconnect audiences with both classic favorites and hidden gems from their catalog.
