Pendergast drew inspiration from the familiar saying, “You don’t know what you have until it’s gone.” From there, he imagined a turbulent relationship shaped by distance, regret, and unresolved feelings.
He wrote the song while reading Jack Kerouac’s On the Road. The novel’s restless energy influenced the track, yet Pendergast kept the focus on intimate, character-driven storytelling. That approach has become a defining part of his songwriting.
Rather than resolve the story, “She Could Be Waiting for You” leaves room for uncertainty. The song moves between optimism and doubt as its narrator wrestles with what could have been. It also captures the questions that remain after a relationship begins to fall apart.
At its core, the track tells a deeply personal story that many listeners can recognize. Pendergast explains:
I am constantly inspired by the folk music of the past, and songs that tell a story. I spend a lot of time on every word in my songs.
Capturing Folk Music in Its Rawest Form
Pendergast also brings that commitment to authenticity into the recording process. He recorded “She Could Be Waiting for You” live off the floor inside a rural Prince Edward Island church. The approach allowed the musicians to perform together in the same space and capture the warmth and spontaneity of a live session.
The band recorded Jack Pine over five days while camping inside the church. Drummer Connor Nabuurs performed behind a glass entryway, while engineer and co-producer Mark Westberg helped shape the sessions. Westberg is known for his work with acclaimed Canadian folksinger David Francey.
For Pendergast, the live approach feels natural to the music.
I’ve really become committed to recording tracks live off the floor. It just feels right for my style of music, and it’s so much more enjoyable.
Moreover, the recording process reflects his desire to preserve the human quality of the performance. He has become increasingly intentional about avoiding overly polished production.
More and more I am conscious of avoiding a ‘generated’ sound.
