Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, and producer Merce begins a new chapter with “My Guy,” the latest single and music video from her debut album, ALIVE.
Created with Rick Friedrich of The Roots and Kush Oxford, the track blends alternative soul, pop, and electronic textures with Merce’s rich harmonies.
At its core, “My Guy” turns uncertainty into self-trust. Instead of dwelling on a relationship that did not work, Merce chooses to look ahead. Through its reflective lyrics and atmospheric sound, the song reminds listeners to trust that what is meant for them will find its way to them.
“My Guy”: A Song About Moving Forward
Musically, “My Guy” unfolds as a slow-burning, atmospheric track. Its moody production creates space for Merce’s vocals to take center stage. Meanwhile, a steady, march-like rhythm reflects the winding road at the heart of the song.
Merce describes the track as less about a person she did not align with and more about reminding herself not to cry over what was never meant to stay. That idea gives the song its emotional center. At the same time, its restrained sound allows the message to feel personal rather than dramatic.

Written after the loss of Merce’s partner and longtime creative collaborator Richard Nichols, the album follows her journey through grief, change, and renewal. A New Chapter for Merce
Merce brings decades of musical experience into her new solo chapter. She first gained recognition as a founding member of The Jazzyfatnastees. Over the years, she also worked with The Roots, Stevie Wonder, De La Soul, and other notable artists. In addition, she helped create Black Lily, a live music series that supported emerging artists.
Now, Merce steps into her own with ALIVE. As an independent artist and producer, she blends acoustic and electronic sounds with her signature harmonies and honest lyrics. Through “My Guy,” she turns personal loss and uncertainty into a message of self-trust, growth, and new beginnings.
