“Fragment” by UNTER STRØM captures the duo’s evolving electronic sound, born from spontaneous collaboration during a two-day studio session.

Electronic duo UNTER STRØM returns with “Fragment,” their third single released through the renegade label Breathing Records. The project brings together Alex Gonzales of Matte Blvck and John Kunkel of The New Division and John Grand.

The pair explores the edges of techno, melodic house, and industrial electronics. Their music combines progressive production with cinematic songwriting and immersive club textures. Moreover, their growing sound has already attracted support from electronic tastemakers such as Above & Beyond’s Group Therapy, Armin van Buuren’s A State of Trance, Ferry Corsten, and Markus Schulz.

A New Way of Creating

“Fragment” takes a different approach from UNTER STRØM’s first two releases. Gonzales and Kunkel developed those tracks remotely. This time, however, they created the entire song together in one room.

The duo spent two uninterrupted days at Los Angeles’ legendary Sound Factory. Without deadlines or distractions, they let the music lead the process. They started with a blank session and exchanged ideas naturally. In addition, they repeatedly switched places behind the desk as the track continued to evolve.

Rather than follow a traditional song structure, UNTER STRØM trusted instinct. Each time the arrangement seemed finished, another section appeared. As a result, “Fragment” constantly shifts and rarely repeats itself.

From Live ID to Defining Track

The duo originally planned to keep “Fragment” as an exclusive live ID. However, the track eventually became one of their most important works. Inspired by Sound Factory’s creative history, the session also changed how UNTER STRØM approached collaboration.

Furthermore, the track captures the duo’s shift from remote exchanges toward spontaneous, in-person creation.

Aaron Short mixed “Fragment,” while Mike Marsh handled mastering. Short has worked with The Naked and Famous and So Below. Meanwhile, Marsh’s credits include Depeche Mode, Massive Attack, The Prodigy, and The Chemical Brothers.

Stream UNTER STRØM’s “Fragment” now and experience the duo’s evolving electronic sound, immersive production, and spontaneous creative energy.
