Crys Matthews releases a double single, reimagining Deportee (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos) and covering a classic peace anthem to spotlight justice.
Crys Matthews releases a new double single that blends tradition with urgency. The project features a cover of “Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream” and a reimagined take on Deportee (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos) titled “Citizen,” recorded with the Resistance Revival Chorus.
Moreover, Matthews recently signed an exclusive publishing and recording deal with TRO Essex Music Group and its label arm, Shamus Records. This move places her alongside influential artists connected to Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger.
Matthews uses “Citizen” to confront modern immigration issues. She drew inspiration from Guthrie’s original song but reshaped it to reflect today’s realities. In addition, she highlights the treatment of immigrant communities and questions systems that demand proof of belonging. She also honors the original’s roots in the Los Gatos plane crash while expanding its message. As a result, “Citizen” invites listeners to engage in deeper conversations about identity and humanity.
Meanwhile, her cover of McCurdy’s song delivers a message of peace. She describes it as simple yet powerful. Furthermore, she emphasizes its emotional impact, recalling how it moved her mother to tears. Through this interpretation, Matthews underscores a shared longing for a world without war.
A Nashville-based artist, Matthews blends Country, Americana, Folk, Blues, and Bluegrass. She pairs traditional melodies with direct, thoughtful lyrics. Consequently, her music speaks to both personal and social realities.
Her achievements reinforce her growing influence. She won Song of the Year at the International Folk Music Awards in 2022 and 2025, becoming the first artist to earn the honor twice. In addition, she received the 2024 Artist of the Year award.
Matthews continues to center her mission on amplifying unheard voices. She aims to inspire change through honesty, hope, and compassion.
