Heavenly Restriction in Jujutsu Kaisen

What do the ever iconic characters Maki and Toji have in common aside from their clan in Jujutsu Kaisen? Of course, it’s their ability heavenly restriction!

Heavenly Restriction in Jujutsu Kaisen is an ability that could be defined as “all or nothing.” This is an ability that is present within a jujutsu sorcerer’s body at birth. It’s called “heavenly” simply because it’s something predetermined and given at the time the sorcerer is born. So far, we know that it’s irreversible and cannot be changed.

What more about have we learned throughout the series? Be warned before you go any further: this article contains spoilers.

Heavenly Restriction’s Conditions

For Maki and Toji, it limits and affects the sorcerer’s reserves of cursed energy in exchange for a body and physical ability which you could say is “blessed by the gods.” However, it is also possible for an individual who is weak physically to be blessed with an extreme abundance of cursed energy or greater cursed technique.

So far, the Jujutsu Kaisen universe only has two known users of this specific kind of heavenly restriction, and both originate from the same clan—the Zenins.

Both users have no zero cursed energy, which makes them the shame of the extremely clan-based and cursed energy loving Zenins. It is stated and implied numerous times that both Toji and Maki suffered under the Zenin clan’s prejudice.

However, despite this, Toji—and therefore, his physical mobility, even without cursed energy—is acknowledged to have superior strength; when Maki comes into her own, the prejudiced Zenin clan members panic among themselves, saying that under no circumstances should they allow Maki to become like Toji.

After all, the Zenin clan apparently only lives on “due to Toji Fushiguro’s whim.” Even Naoya Zenin references Toji when meeting Maki reawakened, absolutely refusing to accept that she is the one like him in that sense. People like them, as Naoya states, are lonely and misunderstood; in this league, he counts Satoru Gojo and Toji Fushiguro.

The Zenin Twins’ Special Circumstances

By Season 3, we see Maki Zenin join their ranks, but only after her twin sister, Mai, dies. Unlike Toji, due to Maki being born a twin, her heavenly restriction could not be considered completely eradicated until Mai dies; as in jujutsu sorcery, twins are considered to be of one soul.

Unfortunately, Maki decides she no longer wants to be clan leader after having the reason for the desire die before her very eyes. Seems like heavenly restrictions seem to come with a matching tragic backstory.
