FLiNR is back with their newest single, “WHAT’S UP,” and a special announcement of their first two-man domestic tour!
Japanese band First Love is Never Returned (FLiNR) is one of Japan’s indie bands on the rise. Their latest single, “WHAT’S UP,” is finally out with an official music video to accompany its release. It’s the first-ever track written and composed by guitarist and chorus member Arata Yamamoto, making it an extra special achievement for the group.

Together with the release, the quintet wrote a special message for their fans to share what they’ve been up to lately. In addition, they also talked about their first two-man tour, which will begin in April:
WHAT’S UP? — how have you all been lately?
This is our first new song after a short break. We’re still living in Sapporo, working regular jobs, and making music within our daily routines. We poured those honest feelings into this track. Please listen to it again and again.
This will be our first two-man tour. Growing up in live houses, we’ve always loved the unique chemistry that happens when sharing the stage with other artists. We want everyone to experience that excitement with us.
2026 feels like the true beginning for FLiNR. We’re not stopping — walk this journey with us.

Behind the Track: “WHAT’S UP”
As their first single of the year, “WHAT’S UP” is an indie-pop track that is perfect for embracing everyday life. Mirroring the constant rhythm of life, the song is layered with repeating instrumentals. Arata’s love for loop-based music shines through, fitting into the song’s concept and overall structure.
Through a cinematic angle, its music video features the never-ending and emotional flow of daily life. The video was created by up-and-coming director Kengo Hanada and fellow Hokkaido-born producer Yosuke Yamaguchi (Koe Inc.).

First Love is Never Returned is composed of five members — Kazuki, Yuji, Keita, Mizuki, and Arata — hailing from Sapporo, Japan. The group is led by vocalist Kazuki Ishida, who honed his vocals in New York. Since their debut, they have continued to showcase their potential with their unique R&B-pop sound.
Following a break during the pandemic, FLiNR refused to be left behind by performing in several festivals and increasing their online presence. Furthermore, they also established a new label partnership and held sold-out one-man shows in Tokyo, Osaka, and Sapporo. Their growing discography and distinct music identity leave no doubt that this year is only the beginning for them. Eager to make their mark, they’re ready to take the Japanese pop music scene by storm.
