The Eradicats

The Eradicats turn a personal eating disorder recovery moment into a bubble-grunge pop-punk anthem with their new single “I Ate a Sandwich.”

Kansas City bubble-grunge quartet The Eradicats return with their new single “I Ate a Sandwich,” a heartfelt and deeply personal track. The song shares bassist and co-vocalist Kristi’s eating disorder recovery story. During a teaching conference lunch, she reached a powerful milestone—eating a boxed sandwich for the first time in years without fear.

The Eradicats

Known for witty humor and unconventional themes—from overeager friendship pursuits to legendary stunt horses—The Eradicats often turn life’s oddities into infectious punk songs. However, “I Ate a Sandwich” takes a more intimate turn.

At first glance, eating a boxed-lunch sandwich seems simple. In the song, however, it marks a powerful milestone—Kristi’s first time in years enjoying one without fear.

Meanwhile, bright melodies and punchy guitars keep the track lively. The band’s mix of sincerity and humor highlights both the anxiety and the triumph behind the moment. In the end, the song shows that pop-punk can stay playful while still carrying real emotional weight.

The Story Behind “I Ate a Sandwich”

The Eradicats member Kristi shared the story behind “I Ate a Sandwich.” For years, she struggled with an eating disorder and feared food. Even the thought of eating pasta once made her cry in a grocery store aisle. Eventually, she sought help and began working with a therapist and a dietician. Slowly, the process began to change her life.

Last spring, a small but meaningful challenge appeared at a teaching conference. Kristi knew the event would include a boxed lunch. This time, she chose to face it instead of bringing her usual “safe” food. In the weeks before the conference, she prepared with her therapist and dietician. Together, they planned how she would handle the moment.

At lunchtime, the box contained exactly what they expected: a sandwich, an apple, chips, and a cookie. Kristi took it one step at a time. Finally, she opened the sandwich and chose the “punk rock” move—eat it as it was. She finished the whole sandwich, even the cheese. For her, it was a powerful milestone in recovery.

The whole experience became this song and it means a lot to me because it’s goofy and fun, as our music tends to be, but it’s also deeply serious and I hope it can resonate with anyone else who may be struggling with an eating disorder or body image disorder.

About The Eradicats

Formed in Kansas City, The Eradicats bring together Kristi (bass, vocals), Josh (guitar, vocals), Chris (guitar), and Justin (drums). The band first gained attention with their debut EP Best in Show, which mixes the wild energy of Pixies, the clever wit of They Might Be Giants, and the infectious urgency of ’90s pop-punk, all with a dash of ska.

Since then, critics have highlighted the group’s balance of humor and heart. For instance, The Punk Site described their sound as “equal parts witty humor and energetic punk rock.” Meanwhile, Punk Rock Theory praised the band’s ability to turn everyday awkwardness into “punk rock gold.”

Now, with “I Ate a Sandwich,” the band expands their range while keeping the playful charm fans love. The single feels catchy, courageous, and cathartic all at once.
