Behind TYPHOON by Luke Chiang
The story behind TYPHOON begins with one of the most challenging periods of Luke Chiang’s life. Six years ago, shortly after a trip to Taiwan during typhoon season, a vocal condition abruptly took away his ability to sing and forced him into a long hiatus.
Although the storm itself did not cause the injury, its timing became a metaphor for the emotional chaos that followed, as Luke entered a period defined by uncertainty and loss. Consequently, TYPHOON channels that inner unrest.
Weaving together reflections on identity, family, love, and self-doubt during a time of profound upheaval. At its core, the album documents a coming-of-age shaped by recovery—both as Luke slowly healed physically and relearned how to exist as an artist.
At the same time, TYPHOON showcases collaboration as a source of renewal. The album brings together an eclectic group of rising artists, including Filipino-Norwegian singer HILLARI, Filipino-American musicians Albert Posis and Jesse Barrera, and Bren Joy.
The focus track, “me & u,” pairs Luke with HILLARI on a gentle duet that centers on choosing commitment despite shared insecurities. Layered with warm synths, soft bass lines, and emotionally rich vocals, the song unfolds as an indie R&B pop track that feels both comforting and current.
Meanwhile, the album builds on the momentum of Luke’s earlier singles “terrible4u,” “what can i do?,” and “say that!” which quickly gained traction across regional streaming platforms. These releases earned prominent playlist placements and introduced his sound to a new wave of listeners, particularly throughout Southeast Asia.
Since his return, Luke’s consistent output and emotional honesty have continued to resonate, ultimately reaffirming his place in today’s pop and R&B landscape.
