Howells release Fade Into Being (Part 1) and unveil “Overflow,” featuring Astrology Girl.
Calgary heavy alternative band Howells have released their new EP, Fade Into Being (Part 1). The project arrived on April 24 and marks the first half of a two-part release. Alongside the EP, the band also premiered the video for “Overflow,” a standout track featuring fellow Alberta act Astrology Girl.

Howells blend emo emotion, shoegaze atmosphere, and metalcore intensity into a sound they describe as “halo-core.” The band combines heavy and melodic elements, drawing comparisons to acts such as Deftones, My Chemical Romance, and The 1975.
Produced with Devin Taylor, a five-time Nail The Mix winner, Fade Into Being (Part 1) represents the band’s most ambitious release so far. The EP also includes collaborations with Astrology Girl and Folded Hand, helping expand the group’s sound into new territory.
Frontman Benjamin Howells said the creative process behind “Overflow” came naturally. He shared:
Writing ‘Overflow’ with Astrology Girl was effortless. They’re exceptional songwriters. Sharp instincts, no hesitation. Chaos, but the right kind.
Howells also approached the release as a larger creative concept. He said he wanted to build a connected world rather than simply release songs. With guidance from JUNO-nominated artist Mercedes Arn-Horn of Softcult, the project developed a unified visual identity.
That vision extends to the single artwork, which explores themes of transformation, decay, and rebirth. The visuals were shot on a 1984 Minolta X-700 camera and center around recurring imagery of a white-tailed deer.
Howells continue to build momentum in Canada’s alternative scene. The band earned a nomination for Rock Recording of the Year at the 2025 YYC Music Awards. They have also received airplay on CBC Radio One, X92.9, and college radio stations across Canada.
Fade Into Being (Part 1) includes six tracks, including acoustic versions of “The Pressure” and “8 Fold Fence.” Part 2 is scheduled for release in fall 2026.
