After a significant life change, Glassio’s third album The Imposter is a deeply personal journey of rediscovering the artistic self.

Irish-Iranian songwriter-producer Glassio releases introspective third album The Imposter. Written after moving across the ocean from New York to London, a newly sober Glassio (Sam R.) reflects on authenticity and identity across 13 luminous tracks.

Dreamy explorations

The Imposter combines shiny bits and pieces from a collection of genres – shoegaze, early-2000s electronica, new wave, and psychedelic folk. It resulted in a tinkly, kaleidoscopic soundscape. Each track offers a new stepping stone in the journey back towards the artist’s sense of self.

The most unique track on the album, “Hit or Bliss,” faces the central dilemma in a spoken meditation: If you were denied the right to create, would you still know who you are? The answer, in turn, can be found after going through difficult but necessary moments of disorientation, self-doubt, and longing, such as in the songs “Join the Club,” and “I’m So Far Away.”

Though Glassio’s previous work was imbued with the escapism of electro/synth-pop bands like M83 and Hot Chip, The Imposter forces the artist to look at what’s already there beneath all the noise: the self that was never gone.

Glassio calls the album’s cathartic penultimate track, “Take a Look at the Flowers,” an “exhale.” He says, “That song became my way of ending the loop. After all the searching, it’s just about stopping for a second – seeing what’s still blooming around you.”

Good on Glassio

With his signature “melancholy disco” sound, Glassio confronts his struggles with addiction and artistic doubt the only way an artist can – through creation. “A maker makes,” he says. “That’s what they are. I had to stop running from that.”

His work has accrued over 25 million streams and appeared on HBO, Netflix, and Amazon Studios. He has collaborated with artists like Madge and Beauty Queen, and received praise from Rolling Stone Mexico, FADER, and Consequence. The Imposter marks the start of a new chapter, an authentic self-portrait of an artist returning to his roots and finding faith in the imperfect process of creation.
