Marvel fans, this animated series gives us a (trick or) treat just in time for the Halloween season.

Marvel Studios Animation has released their latest project with Marvel Zombies. The 4-episode show is a wild ride, with each episode having a creative zombie kill each time. The show utilizes its continuation well from that episode in What If…?. The timing of its release could not have been better as we are approaching the Halloween spirit at this time of the year.

Marvel Zombies is a continuation of the fourth episode of the first season of What If…?. The animation style is still consistent with that series, but it has a twist though, considering this is a zombie themed show, expect a more graphic and violent content. The “charm” and “uniqueness” of this type is the creative and surprising ways of taking out the zombies. Thankfully, we have a lot here. Most of the actors from the MCU reprise their respective roles which give it consistency and familiarity.

Marvel Zombies Plot and Storyline

The main plot of the show picks up from that What If…? episode, in which it is set in an alternate timeline where the world’s population turns into zombies. Yes, that includes most of the main MCU heroes like The Avengers. Now, the remaining survivors found out that there might be a way to save the world, bringing this plague to a stop. But it is not going to be easy (never has been), as they encounter different infected MCU characters like Hawkeye, Abomination, and the “Queen of the dead” Wanda Maximoff.

The show moves at a fast pace, wasting no time to get into the zombie action. This genre of a zombie apocalypse is always fun to tune in to, and Marvel using this trope is always welcome addition. Before this show, there is a comic book story line that is also the same title.

Is the series entertaining? Yes! Fun? Of course! How about dark and depressing? Yes, they went that route. Despite the genre having a “fun” factor to it, when you put things in perspective, the show’s plot is actually scary and gloomy. We are not spoiling some specific things, but after watching, we could not help but feel sad about it. Moreover, if feels anticlimactic because we are so used to our heroes riding to the sunset.

Marvel Zombies is actually a dark show. Also, arguably Marvel Animation’s most graphic show. The action does not hold back on how gory it is.

Final thoughts

Overall, Marvel Zombies is a passable and entertaining entry to the MCU. It is an easy binge watch as it is only 4 episodes. If there is one thing that can be improve, is a definitive ending. Hopefully, we will get more so that is why they went with that route.

Also, can we just say that the promotion for this gives us more hype for Halloween? The “zombified” MCU posters and the cosplayers dressed as the infected version of the heroes gives us joy and the jitters at the same time!
