Queer alt-pop and indie pop rising artist Avery Cochrane unveils her new single and music video, “Griever,” out now via S-Curve Records.

Following the viral success of “Shapeshifting on a Saturday Night,” Avery Cochrane returns with “Griever” on January 16, an emotive and upbeat alt-pop track that channels raw feeling through bright, retro-tinged production. The song balances catharsis and momentum, turning unresolved pain into something you can move to.

“Griever” explores the delayed anger and sorrow that surface after an unexpected encounter with someone from your past. It captures the words you wish you had said—but only found later. Avery Cochrane explains:

The lyrics of “Griever” capture the retroactive rage and sorrow you feel after an unexpected encounter with someone from your past who has wronged you. It’s everything you may have wanted to say in the moment but couldn’t find the words to until days later.

The Viral Success of “Shapeshifting on a Saturday Night”

“Griever” arrives after a breakout year for Avery Cochrane. Previously, her single “Shapeshifting on a Saturday Night” exploded online, earning over 15 million views on TikTok. Soon after, the track landed on major playlists, including Spotify’s Best of Fresh Finds Pop 2025 and the Best of Fresh Finds 2025 year-end list. Along the way, LadyGunn praised the song as “irresistibly catchy.”

The momentum didn’t stop at streaming. Beyond digital platforms, Amazon licensed “Shapeshifting on a Saturday Night” for its BookTok-inspired series Off Campus, launching this spring. As a result, Avery’s presence continues to grow across music, media, and pop culture.

At the same time, Avery’s rise extends to the stage. She has performed at Bumbershoot alongside Weezer, Janelle Monáe, Sylvan Esso, and Tennis. In addition, she has opened for AJR. Now, this March, she brings her live energy to SXSW as one of the festival’s standout emerging pop acts.

A Promising Career Ahead for Avery Cochrane

Looking forward, Avery Cochrane is preparing to release a new EP in March, expanding on the emotional depth and sonic confidence heard in “Griever.” Each release sharpens her ability to capture raw human experience while maintaining a timeless pop sensibility.

Often described as one of pop’s best-kept secrets, Avery has built her reputation on emotive lyricism, cinematic sound, and magnetic live performances. Over time, tracks like “Existential Crisis at the Tennis Club,” a bold queer anthem, and now “Griever,” have placed her at the forefront of a new wave of indie pop artists reshaping the genre.

With “Griever,” Avery Cochrane turns grief into motion and frustration into melody. At the same time, she transforms memory into power. As 2026 approaches, she stands ready to break through on a larger scale—across streaming platforms, festival stages, and beyond.
