Andrew Spice revisits his debut Pretty Demons (Remastered 2026), reaffirming its emotional portrait of queer coming-of-age while marking his return to music after two decades.

With Pretty Demons (Remastered 2026), Andrew Spice returns to his 2003 debut with sharper sound and renewed emotional depth. The piano-driven indie album explores the uncertainty of growing up queer in the late 1990s.

During that period, many searched for belonging while facing isolation, hostility, and fear. Through intimate songwriting, Spice captures themes of identity, love, loss, and survival that still resonate today.

Critics praised the album upon its original release. Publications highlighted the sensitivity of Spice’s lyricism and the poetic quality of his storytelling. In addition, the record earned a nomination for Outstanding Debut Recording at the OutMusic Awards. More than two decades later, its emotional honesty continues to connect with listeners navigating similar struggles.

From Psychology Back to Music

After releasing Pretty Demons, Spice took an unexpected path. He pursued a Ph.D. and built a career as a clinical psychologist. Nevertheless, his creative voice remained active. In 2025, he returned to music with With Animals, produced by two-time JUNO Award nominee Matthew Barber. The album received international attention and brought him to respected Canadian venues, including the National Arts Centre in Ottawa.

The remastered edition of Pretty Demons reflects both personal growth and artistic continuity. Originally produced by three-time JUNO Award nominee Emm Gryner, the album holds deep personal significance.

Spice first met Gryner in 1998, when he was 16 and she was touring with Alanis Morissette in Winnipeg. After sharing demo recordings, he began a collaboration that led to a recording contract and a move to Toronto. Consequently, the project became a defining step in his early career.

At the center of the album is “Unafraid,” a haunting lead single shaped by quiet tension and emotional vulnerability. The song reflects on the realities of growing up queer in rural Manitoba. Although the title suggests courage, the music reveals lingering uncertainty and unease. Even in 2026, these concerns remain relevant, reminding listeners that the search for safety and acceptance continues.
