From Psychology Back to Music
After releasing Pretty Demons, Spice took an unexpected path. He pursued a Ph.D. and built a career as a clinical psychologist. Nevertheless, his creative voice remained active. Spice first met Gryner in 1998, when he was 16 and she was touring with Alanis Morissette in Winnipeg. After sharing demo recordings, he began a collaboration that led to a recording contract and a move to Toronto. Consequently, the project became a defining step in his early career.
At the center of the album is “Unafraid,” a haunting lead single shaped by quiet tension and emotional vulnerability. The song reflects on the realities of growing up queer in rural Manitoba. Although the title suggests courage, the music reveals lingering uncertainty and unease.
