Alaina May unveils “Casual,” a heartfelt indie single exploring emotional complexity, identity, and connection.
Brooklyn-based indie artist Alaina May introduces her new single “Casual,” marking the beginning of a fresh creative chapter. After years of quietly writing and building a deeply personal body of work, she now steps forward with a track that reflects both vulnerability and clarity.

Produced by indie-rock duo TOLEDO, “Casual” pairs soft, atmospheric textures with intimate production. At the same time, Alaina May’s calm and disarming vocal delivery carries the track. Together, they create a sound that feels reflective, emotional, and immersive.
“Casual”
At its core, “Casual” explores the tension between self-awareness and emotional pull. May describes the song as a reflection on limerence and misplaced connection. She explains that even after recognizing unhealthy patterns, emotions can still override logic.
She shares, “‘Casual’ lives in that space where you mistake limerence for real connection. You can name the pattern and still get pulled in.” Through this lens, the track captures the push and pull between wanting something light and realizing deeper emotional needs that refuse to stay simple.
Musically, the song mirrors that emotional blur. Soft, layered production creates space around her voice, while subtle melodic shifts build a sense of tension. As a result, “Casual” feels both restrained and emotionally charged at the same time.
Alaina May’s songwriting is shaped by her personal journey of identity and self-discovery. She grew up in a conservative suburb outside Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she was raised within the Christian church. As a result, she spent much of her early life conforming to external expectations.
However, things changed when she moved to Boston for college. There, she began stepping away from those limitations and embraced her identity as a queer woman. Since then, her music has reflected themes of love, loss, identity, and emotional transformation.
More recently, after relocating to New York in late 2025, she continued refining her sound. She also began working closely with indie duo TOLEDO, a collaboration that started through a chance message and quickly developed into a creative partnership.
According to May, this collaboration helps her shape the natural flow of her songwriting. As a result, “Casual” feels more focused and cohesive.
Ultimately, “Casual” presents a clearer vision of Alaina May’s artistry. It captures emotional contradiction, personal growth, and the complexity of human connection. At the same time, it points toward a stronger and more defined direction for what comes next.
