A dynamic duo rendition, Monsta X’s SHOWNU and HYUNGWON collaborate in a fresh version of 2PM’s “I Hate You” for their latest Spotify K-Pop ON! (온) single.
K-Pop ON! (온) First Crush is a campaign launched by Spotify that aims to put up a space for listeners to enjoy and reminisce about the music of K-Pop. Shownu and Hyungwon’s debut release is set to celebrate the anniversary of K-Pop ON! (온) global flagship playlist.
Furthermore, since its launch in 2014, K-Pop ON! (온) flagship playlist garnered over 5.3 million Spotify users worldwide and, at present, matches billions of streams for Korean artists.
“I Hate You” is a track from 2 PM’s 2:00 Time For Change album in 2009. Monsta X’s Shownu and Hyungwon’s version take on the second of three Spotify-exclusive covers expected for the series.

Moreover, Monsta X’s subunit wanted to put their style into paying tribute to their sunbaenims. Also, it has been revealed that “I Hate You” is Shownu and Hyungwon’s favorite song from 2PM.
“We grew up admiring the performances and choreography videos of our respected and beloved sunbae (senior artists), 2PM. “I Hate You” is such an iconic song, and the original version will always be something only 2PM can deliver. So rather than covering the track as it is, we’re honoring the song by delivering a version that allows us to put our best performance forward,” the duo said.
“It was refreshing for us to be able to fuse our styles on a music piece once again, continuing our activities as a unit. Our hope is that listeners who come across our version of ‘I Hate You’ will find themselves falling in love with K-Pop, just as we did back in the day,” they shared.
The subunit’s version of “I Hate You” features R&B-inspired tunes layered with UK garage rhythms and chill sounds. With their dreamy vocals, accompanied by powerful bass, the track conveys a unique sense of suaveness and emotion that adds a kick of flavor to the sound.

By all means, get to see more of the duo. Spotify will be rolling out a series of behind-the-scenes exclusives. On March 2, a performance of the song will be available via Spotify’s official video podcast and YouTube channels.
Further, a special episode will air on March 4 to take K-Pop fans on a time-travel journey and discover their favorite K-idol song inspirations. In addition, on March 6, Shownu and Hyungwon’s “I Hate You” and “In the Making” content will be released.
The song is produced as a gift for Monbebes (Monsta X’s fans) before Hyungwon’s mandatory military enlistment.
