Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Episode 4: “Gloves Off”

The episode starts off with Benjamin Poindexter, the assassin known as “Bullseye.” Our unhinged marksman is seemingly living a low-key, normal life, or so it seems. Bullseye goes to a diner to order a banana milkshake. Fans of the original series might pick up on this, as banana is also the flavor of his protein powder. He calls the anti-vigilante task force to report that Frank Castle is in the area.

Clearly, he is attempting to lure the task force so that he can eliminate them.

What comes next is maybe the best action scene we get from Bullseye. Using his expert targeting skills, we get one of the most creative and graphic kills in the season so far. Seemingly, he only takes out the task force, leaving the innocent civilians alive. According to him, he is “one of the good guys.”

“You’re not a hero. You’re a symbol now.

Picking up from the events of last week’s episodes. Daredevil, Karen Page, and Angela Del Toro are in hiding with the escaped prisoners from Red Hook. Jack Duquesne (Swordsman) tells Matt that he gives Karen an account number for whatever they need. Sadly, he may not join the resistance. He praises Daredevil, saying that he is no longer just a hero but a symbol. They discover that Wilson Fisk’s charity boxing match is just a trap to lure vigilantes in, like Bullseye. So Daredevil tracks him down.

Daredevil goes undercover as a task force member to investigate the scene in the diner earlier. After that, he goes to his old church that he used to frequent. He finds out that Bullseye goes here and pinpoints where he lives. One detail that older fans might appreciate is that while Daredevil talks with the young parishioner, flashbacks from the original series are shown. Additionally, the scene proves that the old series is canon to this.

Leveling the scales

Bullseye is back at his apartment, knows that Daredevil is waiting for him, and we get another fight scene with the two.  He holds his neighbor hostage, and a debate spews between them; he convinces Daredevil that he is doing “one good deed” to make up for what he did to Foggy Nelson. Daredevil is having none of it, as Bullseye says that he needs to get his mind back after what Vanessa and Kingpin did to him. He argues that he and Daredevil are on the same side. Moreover, he will do what Daredevil won’t, as he escapes to go to the boxing match.

The gloves are definitely off

At the boxing match, Wilson Fisk overpowers his opponent and wins. Vanessa arrives to watch her husband, but he does not want her to be there as it could get dangerous. As cheers get louder, Bullseye arrives and takes out the task force guarding the event. He gets a small glass souvenir sculpture and throws it at Vanessa; Wilson blocks it with his championship belt. Wilson gets a gun from one of the task force to finish off Bullseye, but Daredevil disrupts that, and he and Bullseye swing outside the boxing gym.

When we think the chaos is done, Vanessa calls Wilson, and we see that a shard of the glass stabs her to the side of the head. Bleeding out, we see Wilson plead for help for his dying wife. Wilson, who can protect the one he loves most, is the reason her life is in danger.

Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Episode 4 thoughts

Wow, what an episode. Watching throughout, you feel the tension building up, and it leads to a crescendo of a final scene. Wilson Bethel as Bullseye owns this role and is the scene-stealer of the whole episode. Reviews say that after episode 4, each episode will outdo the previous one. By that, we cannot wait for next week’s episode.
