Tempest keeps the tension up both plotwise and between Munju and Sanho in episode 2.
Tempest episode 2 further explores the background of Paik Sanho (Gang Dong Won). So far, we know that he is a top mercenary in a military contractor group known as Valkyrie that can kill anyone. He is a good friend of Father Yang (Park Hae Joon) and seems to be living in the church.

It is also revealed that Sanho has seen Seo Munju (Jun Ji Hyun) before they met at the church. When he was in Iraq, he saw Munju’s speech about inter-Korean relations. Sanho’s grandmother is still living in North Korea, and Munju’s speech must have resonated with him.
Munju investigates
After discovering that there might be more to her husband Jang Junik (Park Hae Joon)’s death, Munju starts to investigate. She finds out that Junsang (Oh Jung Se), his older brother, was tailing him. Junsang tells Munju that Junik was a spy who was in constant communication with Anderson Miller (John Cho), the Assistant Secretary of State of the United States (US). Munju, however, refuses to believe him.
Meanwhile, Father Yang advises Sanho to visit his grandmother in North Korea. He gives Sanho a St. Anthony necklace to keep him safe. Sanho, realizing Father Yang might be in danger, goes back.
At the same time, in an attempt to uncover the truth behind her husband’s death, Munju visits Father Yang. Munju and Sanho meet again and she follows him to an underground tunnel. She has her suspicions about Sanho and confronts him about his affiliation with Valkyrie. In response, Sanho teases Munju why she’d follow him in a tunnel 40 feet underground if she thought he was dangerous.
They find a letter Anderson sent to Junik in the wine bottle Father Yang gave as a gift to Sanho. In the letter, Anderson warned Junik that a war could break out between the United States and North Korea putting the whole Korean peninsula and millions of innocent lives at risk.
Sanho gives Munju the St. Anthony necklace
With the letter now in possession of Munju, they decide to go their separate ways with Sanho continuing his journey back to North Korea. Sanho makes his first move by giving Munju the St. Anthony necklace. He says that St. Anthony is the patron saint of counter-revolutionaries and while it is a gift from Father Yang, he has miles to go and should travel “light” leaving the necklace in Munju’s care.
The new presidential candidate
After the ultimate betrayal of President Kyungsin (Kim Hae Sook) towards Munju, she decides to turn to her mother-in-law for help. We get a glimpse of the dynamic between Munju and Okseon (Kim Mi Sook), her mother-in-law. They are not close, far from it, but both women were equally admirable in their own right.
Munju goes straight to the point and offers to return all of Junik’s assets to her mother-in-law. In exchange, she needs Okseon’s help in putting her in the presidential race. Okseon agrees and a powerful alliance is formed between Munju and Okseon.
What’s Next
Episode 2 ended with Sanho finally renewing his contract with Valkyrie to protect Munju. In the next episode, we can expect to see more of Okseon as she prepares to put Munju in the presidential race and the challenges they might encounter ahead.
Tempest season 1 will run until October 1, 2025. The first three episodes are now streaming on Hulu and Disney+. New episodes will be released on September 17.
