My Youth Episode 9 Recap: Promises

At the hospital, a nurse informs Hae that Je-yeon has just undergone surgery for appendicitis. In her room, he cries as he admits he isn’t the person she thinks he is; he’s someone who always bets on the worst outcome. Je-yeon tells him to just be the person she believes he is and to leave if he doesn’t intend to stay. Hae stays, and they seal the moment with a pinky promise.

Back at home, Nu-ri tells Seok-joo about her upcoming college exam for photography. She asks him about his mother. This leads to a flashback when young Nu-ri is in Pil-doo’s home during Hae’s military service.

There, she notices a camera on a table. Pil-doo lets her try it. It’s revealed that the camera Nu-ri uses today is from Pil-doo.

Seok-joo arrives home to find Pil-doo asleep. When she wakes, she talks about younger generations who aren’t following orders, like Je-yeon. Seok-joo then asks her to drive someone for an exam, as he still can’t drive.

When Hae returns home, Seok-joo prepares food and asks if Hae and Nu-ri had a fight. Hae explains that Nu-ri’s biological mother came. Seok-joo scolds Hae for not telling him sooner; he claims he has the right to know since he helped raise Nu-ri.

At an Internet café, Sa-rang uses Nu-ri’s phone to send a message to Hae; Nu-ri sees the message and breaks up with him.

That night, Hae and Je-yeon watch the final episode of the documentary. Hae thanks her but wonders if he’s good enough. Je-yeon responds that they should do everything together from then on. Hae promises that he’ll become the man that she knows.

Seok-joo passes by Tae-rin’s photoshoot, where their eyes meet. Gi-ppeum hands Tae-rin a drink and follows her gaze. He lights up when he spots Seok-joo. A mother asks Seok-joo to take a photo of her with Tae-rin. Tae-rin assumes Seok-joo wants a photo with her instead. They end up taking pictures together.

At a pizza place, Nu-ri meets with Hae after Sa-rang tips him off. Nu-ri finally reveals her upcoming exam. They reconcile, and Nu-ri agrees to meet her mother.

The photoshoot wraps up, and Tae-rin signs her picture with Seok-joo. She tells him she doesn’t dislike him. To her surprise, Seok-joo kisses her. When he confesses his feelings, Tae-rin kisses him back.

At the flower shop, the documentary PD invites Je-yeon and Hae to her wedding. She asks Hae to make the bouquet and boutonniere. The PD also requests Je-yeon to host the event.

As they walk home, Hae and Je-yeon discuss her hosting gig. Hae wrongly assumes that Je-yeon is hesitant to talk about her past. Je-yeon cups his face and tells him to stay in the present.

Chan kneels before Pil-doo to apologize. Nu-ri and Seok-joo witness the moment. Pil-doo accepts Chan’s apology and invites him to their trip. Tae-rin waits for Je-yeon and gives her a gift. Je-yeon tells her that she and Hae are dating. While practicing for an interview, Tae-rin recalls her kiss with Seok-joo.

My Youth Episode 9 Reaction

It seems like every character in this drama has a way with words. Je-yeon’s letter to Hae is endearing. It’s also charming how she starts it at the same time when her feelings for him began and finishes it when she knows he also feels the same way about her. However, the episode’s spotlight belongs to Seok-joo and Tae-rin’s kisses.
