My Youth Episode 5 Recap: Sibling Love

That night, Je-yeon wonders what it would be like to sleep beside a man apart from Hae. She imagines it with Seok-joo, but in the reenactment, she walks away. Back at home, Hae asks for Nu-ri’s report card. Though Nu-ri ranks low, Hae doesn’t seem too bothered.

At the bookstore, Hae and the owner discuss his health. He was scheduled for a blood test, but it was postponed because he got stuck elsewhere during the storm.

Je-yeon also receives a message from a PD that Tae-rin wasn’t chosen for a show. Still, the PD informs Je-yeon that his daughter is seeking writing feedback from Jin Mu-yeong.

In the Kim family’s home, Seok-joo calls Hae to check on a weed that is growing in their garden. Suddenly, Pil-doo arrives home and grows furious upon seeing Hae.

Later, the stepbrothers discuss payment for the garden maintenance, which leads them to reminisce about their past—particularly how Seok-joo cared for Nu-ri when Hae had to serve in the military. Their banter feels like that of real brothers, with Seok-joo even offering his car to Hae once again, though Hae refuses. As he leaves, Hae receives a call about his blood test results.

Trifecta of TLC

Back at the flower shop, Hae notices the gloves Je-yeon had given him. He calls her at work, saying he misses her and asking to meet so he can give her the contract. The two end up watching a movie together.

Meanwhile, Chan and Pil-doo dine together and discuss their blended family. Chan learns that Hae and Seok-joo have been spending time together. The scene then shifts to Hae and Je-yeon sharing a meal.

While the main couple chats, it becomes clear that they have known each other since before high school. Je-yeon reminds Hae that they once attended an academy together, where young Je-yeon gave young Hae flowers—flowers he threw away. Hae explains he was struggling at the time, constantly going in and out of the hospital.

Later, Hae drives Je-yeon home, giving her both flowers and the contract. He asks her out, but she refuses, so he settles for being her “friend number one.”

Elsewhere, Tae-rin and Je-yeon talk about quitting together, but ultimately, they part ways. Je-yeon then asks Seok-joo to take Tae-rin home. Sitting beside her, Tae-rin recalls how she nearly fell from their school rooftop until young Je-yeon caught her. Later, in a classroom, it was young Seok-joo who caught her during another near fall.

Back in the present, Seok-joo offers to drive Tae-rin home, but she declines. He couldn’t drive anyway, having failed his driving test again. Seok-joo then asks Je-yeon to teach him how to drive.

Entanglements

Geon-no and Hae head back to the bar, where they talk about Hae’s novels. Geon-no encourages him to do what he loves without worrying about money. Meanwhile at the office, Pil-doo vents her anger during a meeting as the production for World Made of Ash risks being halted unless they secure the original author’s approval.

Rushing to the flower shop, Je-yeon informs Hae about the situation, seeking his approval as the original author. Hae tells her to go through his agent, Geon-no, but quickly agrees to the rights for himself. Je-yeon advises him to speak up if he ever faces unfair contracts.

Soon after, the documentary airs. At the office, male staff gossip about Hae’s past fraud case. Some speculate he joined the documentary to seek a sponsor. Hearing their remarks, Je-yeon stands up and argues with them. When one staff member grabs her collar, Hae suddenly appears and steps in to fight back.

My Youth Episode 5 Reaction

Of all the relationships in My Youth, Hae, Seok-joo, and Nu-ri’s sibling bond stands out as the warmest and most genuine. Seok-joo’s small gestures—like lending his car to Hae or tutoring his stepbrother’s unofficially adopted sister (and former stepsister)—make their dynamic even more endearing. The bonds in this story may be complex and uncertain, but they’re also deeply human.
