Rati Writes a Letter to His Father in Memoir of Rati Episode 4

Memoir of Rati Episode 4 opens with Rati writing a letter to his father, Lord Lutin. In the letter, he shares that teaching French to Siamese officials isn’t difficult—he’s simply using what his mother, Rung, taught him.

However, due to the ongoing conflict between France and Siam, some Siamese still hold anger and prejudice. Rati expresses hope that teaching the French language could serve as a gesture of goodwill and sincerity from the French to the Siamese people.

Furthermore, he also mentions his sister, Belle, warmly expressing concern for her. He asks his father to tell Belle that they’ll play again once he returns home.

After finishing the letter, Rati picks up his locket and speaks softly to the photo of his late mother, Rung. In quiet whispers, he asks her not to tell anyone what he’s truly feeling. As if reassuring himself, he affirms that he can do it.

Thee’s Effort to Earn Rati’s Trust Once Again

Thee, on the other hand, doesn’t give up on pursuing Rati—still hoping for a second chance at their friendship.

The next morning, Thee arrives at Rati’s residence to pick him up and drive him to school. Though Rati refuses at first, Thee insists, saying it’s his duty to make Rati’s stay in Siam as comfortable as possible.

On their way to school, the two engage in their usual noble bickering and sarcastic banter. Thee catches Rati smiling mid-conversation, which makes him smile too— though Rati quickly hides it by putting on his poker face once he notices Thee looking.

Upon arriving at school, Thee continues trying to convince Rati to forgive him. However, Rati firmly reminds him that, on school grounds, he must be addressed as “Professor.”

He explains that their relationship within the school is strictly student and teacher— both out of professionalism and to avoid rumors that the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Education is showing him favoritism.

He asks Mhay (Thee’s apprentice) to say he’s not around or hasn’t seen him if anyone asks. When Dech shows up in front of Mhay, he asks if he has seen Mek. Mhay initially denies it, but accidentally slips and reveals that he was just talking to him.

Dech tries to find Mek but comes up empty—or so Mek thinks. Just as Mek comes out of hiding, relieved to see Dech walk away, he finds Dech waiting for him.

Dech calls Mek “Muay fighter,” which Mek denies again. But this time, Dech is certain—it’s no use hiding anymore. He even smells garlic on Mek’s breath, a common remedy used by Muay fighters to relieve pain.

Dech challenges Mek to a rematch, but just as they’re talking, Dech’s father appears, prompting Mek to bolt from the scene.

Rati’s Struggles in Teaching Siamese Officials

In truth, teaching isn’t difficult for Rati—especially since French is his area of expertise. However, the real challenge lies in dealing with his uncle, a Siamese official who keeps interrupting him during class.

His uncle mocks him with insults, even calling him a “slave.” He orders Rati to translate the phrase, “My mother is a slave. My whole family is.” and says he must memorize it.

To turn the insult around, Rati has his uncle repeat the French translation aloud. He coolly explains that if he truly wants to memorize it, he must speak it clearly. Subtly backing him up, Prince Mai encourages Lord Ruj to continue until he gets it right.

A savage move—served with pure professionalism.

Rati and Prince Mai’s Camaraderie

Thanks to Rati’s genuine and respectful treatment of the Siamese people, he seems to have gained another ally—Prince Mai.

Prince Mai is one of the Siamese officials attending Rati’s French class. He often stands up for Rati, especially when Lord Ruj tries to ridicule him. At one point, Prince Mai suggests that he and Rati speak informally to feel more comfortable around each other. He also praises Rati’s maturity despite his young age.

Prince Mai then asks to walk Rati home, to which Rati agrees. Unbeknownst to them, Thee secretly follows, curious about their conversation.

Dech and Mek’s Muay Thai Rematch

Mek finds Dech waiting for him at the Muay Thai ring. Dech offers him 50 baht to agree to a fight—and Mek accepts immediately.

During the match, however, Mek seems to be holding back. Dech, frustrated, threatens that his father could get Mek fired if he doesn’t take the fight seriously. Mek then unleashes his punches, and with just one blow, Dech falls to the ground, joking that he’s seeing stars.

Later, when they’re back at Dech’s home, he asks Mek why he’s so focused on making money. Mek answers that it’s better to have something than nothing. He even gives Dech some garlic cloves to help ease his pain.

Dech presses Mek again, asking why he fights. Mek counters by asking Dech the same—why would someone as privileged as him choose to fight in Muay Thai?

Dech responds, “Because I already have everything… so I want to experience what I don’t.” Mek, on the other hand, says, “It’s different for me. I have nothing. I have to work for everything.” He adds that when you’re poor, you don’t get to choose what you like—only what pays. Then he tells Dech, “You’re lucky you have the freedom to choose. So choose wisely.

Dech is left deep in thought that night.

The Reconciliation Between Thee and Rati

Thee continues to go the extra mile to earn Rati’s trust. He delivers food to Rati, helps clean his house, and even buys him a bicycle after hearing Rati’s fondness for them. But despite his efforts, Rati remains cold.

Later in the episode, Thee visits Lord Ruj’s residence and politely asks him to act with respect in Rati’s class. Lord Ruj responds rudely, even threatening to drop the class unless required to attend.

Thee bravely offers to remove Lord Ruj’s name from the student list and report his misconduct. As Lord Ruj turns away, he sees a servant eavesdropping and furiously raises a tray to strike her—but Thee intervenes. In the process, Thee is injured, and his head begins to bleed.

Mhay rushes to Rati and tells him what happened. Rati quickly rides his bicycle to find Thee sitting near the bridge—alone and untreated. Rati insists they go to the hospital, but Thee refuses, saying he’ll only go if they reconcile.

Moved, Rati begins to soften. Thee admits it was his cowardice that led him to lie—he was afraid Rati would reject him once he learned his true identity.

With a bit of playful guilt-tripping, Thee finally earns Rati’s forgiveness. Thee then asks Rati to call him by his name—and Rati does, with a smile.
