Phoebe Rea’s new chapter starts with song “Meet Me There,” a song that unfolds grief – to acknowledge the loss person of a person, then celebrating their life.
Singer-songwriter Phoebe Rea has a new single “Meet Me There” that begins a new chapter in her music career. The song is a piano-led slice of nu-jazz, filled with delicate harmonies and layers of instrumentation and texture. The busy and whimsical arrangement constantly shifts, keeping the track moving and unfolding until the end.
The singer expresses that she wanted to move beyond some of the darker themes of her early twenties and start leaning into the light. This led to the idea of using phototropism (the way plants react to and grow towards light), which is the theme for this new project.
Will Phoebe be embracing warmth and growth after “digging her roots into the ground” in her debut EP Anybody Else?
At the heart of her new single is Phoebe’s grandad, who passed away over three years ago. Phoebe continues to carry pieces of him into her life. She shares:
I find him whenever I see a good view or go on a good walk, or when I decide to go to an exhibition and firstly have to stop at the museum cafe for a coffee and cake because that’s what we used to do with him. I find him in my desire to see the world. He’s a constant reminder to make the absolute most of life because he was so good at living.
“Meet Me There” gives Phoebe the space the acknowledge how deeply the loss affected her. She admits that she previously downplayed her grief, since she felt that losing a grandparent felt inevitable and expected. But then, she began to recognize its impact on her life over the past three years. As a result, their grief is turned into a celebration of his legacy in her and her family’s life.
Getting to see him was like travelling home to myself. And now I get to find little pieces of him everywhere I go and in the things I do because he was so generous with himself that he passed so much of himself into us, and that’s something to celebrate.
