da nang turns heartbreak into humor with “IYKYK,” a punchy indie rock and emo anthem inspired by ghosting after a seven-year relationship.
Toronto indie rock and emo trio da nang channels ghosting and heartbreak into “IYKYK,” a punchy new single that mixes humor with emotional release. Inspired by lead singer John’s experience of being ghosted after a seven-year relationship, the track transforms frustration and petty anger into a high-energy breakup anthem.
With its driving indie rock sound, emo influences, and rowdy gang vocals, the song offers an outlet for anyone who has ever been left without an explanation. Rather than dwelling on heartbreak, da nang finds a way to laugh through the pain.

da nang wrote “IYKYK” during a trip to Picard Lake in Ontario’s Kawarthas region, shortly after John’s breakup. Instead of treating the experience as a solemn reflection on lost love, the band embraced its messier emotions. They wrote the entire track in one chaotic day, describing it as a “polite middle finger” to the situation.
The title also reflects John’s decision to keep the breakup private. When the relationship faced earlier challenges, its drama played out publicly on social media. This time, however, he chose to step away from the spotlight and focus on rebuilding himself. As a result, “IYKYK” became an inside joke for those who knew the story, adding another layer of meaning to its playful attitude.
“IYKYK”: Unfiltered Chaos in a Track
Musically, “IYKYK” blends high-energy indie rock and emo with the communal spirit of a sea shanty. Its full-throated gang vocals invite listeners to sing along, turning personal frustration into a shared experience. Meanwhile, its deliberately irreverent approach reminds listeners that heartbreak does not always need a serious response.
The song also came together in an unexpectedly casual setting. While John cooked a large pot of bolognese for da nang, bassist Calum entered the kitchen with an acoustic guitar and started playing a catchy riff. Without putting down his wooden spoon, John began singing lyrics over the melody.
Within two hours, da nang had abandoned dinner preparations for an impromptu jam session. For a band whose songs sometimes take months to develop, the experience showed how spontaneity can spark something special.
Ultimately, da nang turns a painful breakup into a cathartic sing-along with “IYKYK,” proving that humor, volume, and a little pettiness can make heartbreak easier to face.
