Gregory Douglass reimagines Tori Amos’ “Tear In Your Hand,” offering a deeply personal take on heartbreak, change, identity, and healing.

Queer singer-songwriter Gregory Douglass returns with “Tear In Your Hand,” his latest single and first recorded cover of a Tori Amos song. The track reinterprets the emotionally layered song from Amos’ landmark album Little Earthquakes through Douglass’ intimate style.

Douglass describes Amos as one of the artists who shaped his approach to songwriting and music. He also says the song has accompanied him through major transitions in his life.

For Douglass, “Tear In Your Hand” captures the tension between intimacy, heartbreak, and uncertainty. Moreover, he views the track as a breakup anthem about releasing what feels familiar and facing what comes next. Rather than simply recreating the original, he gives the song a deeply personal interpretation through his own voice.

The single also serves as the second release from AMATEUR, his upcoming eleventh studio album. The project explores love, queer identity, fantasy, grief, healing, and the complicated process of understanding oneself.

A New Chapter for Gregory Douglass

Douglass has spent 25 years building his career independently. He began by writing songs at the piano, releasing albums on his own, touring extensively, and performing intimate house concerts. Over the years, he developed a devoted audience through direct support from fans.

His work has earned recognition from NPR and OUT Magazine. He has also shared stages with Grace Potter, Jason Mraz, Regina Spektor, Patty Griffin, They Might Be Giants, and Anaïs Mitchell. In addition, his song “Alibis” appeared in the Netflix series The Rain in 2019.

After more than a decade of constant touring and releases, Douglass eventually stepped away from the cycle. Now, AMATEUR marks his first major collection of original material in nearly a decade.

The album strips back modern production and centers on piano, vocals, strings, and bass. Through its chamber-pop sound, Douglass reflects on queer life, open relationships, childhood memories, artistic survival, and self-acceptance.

Instead of releasing the album at once, Douglass will unveil singles throughout 2026. The full AMATEUR album will arrive in November, giving listeners time to experience its emotional journey piece by piece.

Stream Gregory Douglass’ “Tear In Your Hand” now and experience his intimate interpretation of Tori Amos’ emotionally powerful classic.
