What happens when love falls apart? Belle and Chain dive into jealousy, betrayal, and heartbreak with their haunting new single “Laila.”

LA-based rock duo Belle and Chain, formed by Spencer Grammer and Davis IL, drops their new single, “Laila,” following their debut release, “Don’t You Worry Babe.” Since then, the duo has taken their music on the road, touring North America with British singer-songwriter Barns Courtney and performing at festivals across the country.

Exploring Love, Jealousy, and Betrayal

“Laila” delves into jealousy, desire, betrayal, and the uncertainty that follows when a relationship begins to unravel. Spencer Grammer’s intimate vocals move through sweeping strings and haunting Martenot tones. Together, these elements create a dark, atmospheric backdrop for the song’s emotional story.

The single draws from a personal experience involving a woman who came between Spencer Grammer and someone she was seeing. However, rather than placing blame, she uses the song to explore the complicated truths that surface when love begins to fracture. She shares

“Laila” can be interpreted two ways: an obsession with the woman one wishes they were, or a plea to the woman who tempts your partner.

Meanwhile, “Laila” also highlights Belle and Chain’s evolving sound. What started as Spencer Grammer’s solo project has grown into a creative partnership with multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Davis IL. Together, as Belle and Chain, they draw from alt-country, gothic rock, and traditional folk. As a result, their music captures the dust, darkness, and stark beauty of the American West.

Turning Personal Struggles Into Music

For Spencer Grammer, music became a way to rebuild her confidence after a 2020 attack damaged her right hand. During her recovery, she turned to guitar and began writing songs in 2024. Since then, Belle and Chain have gained momentum, with “Don’t You Worry Babe” earning early support from Entertainment Tonight, Luna Collective Magazine, and Buzzbands LA.

Now, “Laila” marks another step forward. Through haunting production and vulnerable storytelling, Belle and Chain turn a personal experience into a reflection on love, loss, and the complicated truths behind relationships.
