Jose Mari Chan clarifies that his comments on lost royalty checks referred only to physical albums, not all music royalties from his iconic catalog.

Veteran singer-songwriter Jose Mari Chan has clarified his recent comments about no longer receiving “royalty checks,” explaining that he was referring only to royalties from physical music sales such as CDs, cassettes, and vinyl records. His statement did not mean that he no longer earns royalties from his music.

The clarification followed remarks he made during the media conference for his upcoming concert Afterglow: Seasons of the Heart, scheduled on July 11 at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC). Some interpretations of his comments suggested that he had stopped receiving all forms of music royalties, leading to discussions online.

Universal Records Managing Director Kathleen Dy-Go explained that Chan’s remarks focused on the decline of physical album sales as music consumption shifted toward digital platforms.

“Mr. Jose Mari Chan was referring specifically to royalties from CDs, cassettes, and vinyl records,” Dy-Go said. She added that declining demand for physical formats naturally affected the royalties connected to those sales.

Understanding the Changes in Music Revenue

Dy-Go emphasized that artists today can earn through various sources, including digital streaming, music publishing, synchronization licenses, public performances, and other authorized uses of their recordings. These earnings depend on each artist’s agreements and rights arrangements.

She also highlighted how the music industry has transformed over the years. While physical albums once dominated music consumption, streaming platforms and digital services now play a major role in how audiences discover and support artists.

Chan reflected on this industry shift during his media appearance, recalling his journey through different eras of music—from vinyl records and cassette tapes to CDs and today’s digital landscape.

With timeless hits such as “Beautiful Girl,” “Can We Just Stop and Talk Awhile,” and “Christmas in Our Hearts,” Jose Mari Chan remains one of the Philippines’ most respected recording artists. His clarification reinforces the difference between declining physical album royalties and the broader opportunities available in today’s music industry.
