Perfect Crown Episode 1 Recap: Status and Power in the 21st Century

The Joseon throne stood strong for 600 years, but eventually shifted into a constitutional monarchy. As a result, its power became mostly ceremonial. As Seong Hui-ju puts it, “Power became class. Class became hereditary. And it held on tenaciously.”

Then, the story shifts to Seong Hui-ju’s high school days at Seonggyungwan. She constantly competed with Ryu Min-seok, a noble—and kept winning. However, most students came from royal families and looked down on her for being the illegitimate daughter of a business elite. Even the school kept reminding her of her place.

Still, Hui-ju refused to back down and stood her ground every time. After graduation, she takes charge of one of her family’s businesses, Castle Beauty. From there, she uses her palace visit for the Crown Prince’s royal birthday banquet to create buzz and raise sales.

Crown Prince’s Royal Birthday Banquet

Seong Hui-ju arrives at the palace in a striking red suit from her own brand—and it instantly sells out after going viral. However, the moment quickly sours as people gossip about her being a commoner and an illegitimate child. Even her brother, Tae-joo, adds to the tension, despite the fact that she consistently outperforms him in business.

Meanwhile, the royal birthday banquet for the Crown Prince stalls as everyone waits for Grand Prince Yi An. When he finally arrives in hunting attire, he immediately grabs attention. The young Crown Prince lights up at the sight of him, but Queen Mother Yi-rang shows clear disapproval. Eventually, the celebration continues and ends with “Nakhwa Nori,” a traditional fireworks display.

Later, Hui-ju chats with Prime Minister Min Jeong-woo like an old friend. He points out her striking red outfit, noting that the color isn’t allowed in the palace. Still, Hui-ju brushes it off. However, Min warns her, saying it could spark controversy.

A Sudden Fire Breaks Out at the Palace

Later that night, Grand Prince Yi An talks to Prime Minister Min about marriage. The Queen Mother frequently asks him to wed, but Yi An explains that once he marries, he must leave the palace. As a result, serving as regent becomes difficult, especially since the young Crown Prince cannot yet handle state affairs. He would end up doing everything alone. Hearing this, Min firmly rejects the idea, as it will mean more work for him. So, Yi An tells him to block it using his power, since a royal marriage requires Cabinet approval under the Royal Family Act.

Soon after, Yi An spots Hui-ju wandering in a restricted part of the palace. He warns her to disappear in three seconds or face consequences. However, a sudden explosion interrupts them. Yi An rushes out and tells Hui-ju to stay put—but she secretly follows him.

A fire has broken out in the palace. The incident triggers Yi An’s trauma, as the late king died in a fire three years ago. Suddenly, Queen Mother Yi-rang appears and slaps Yi An, immediately blaming him for the fire. Everyone is shocked. Moments later, the Crown Prince arrives, and Yi-rang quickly rushes to his side. Meanwhile, after witnessing everything, Hui-ju quietly slips away.

Hui-ju Looks Back on Her Encounter with Yi An

On the drive home, Hui-ju describes Grand Prince Yi An as arrogant. At the same time, she recalls their past encounter at Seonggyungwan. Back then, she caught him secretly practicing archery at night. However, she confronted him about the school’s bias—since they approved his private training but denied her the same privilege. Before leaving, she said, “I intend to enjoy every opportunity my enemy enjoys. I’d rather play dirty and win than play clean and lose.” Yi An was shocked by her honesty, even as she still showed him respect as a prince and senior.

The next day, Queen Mother Yi-rang visits Yi An and apologizes for slapping him. However, she quickly shifts the conversation, expressing concern that his role as regent is overshadowing the Crown Prince. She also complains that people at the palace and the public prefer Yi An over the young heir.

Yi An responds calmly and says he is not to blame, since his role as a royal has always been to stay passive. This comment takes him back to his childhood, when the King repeatedly warned him never to go against the Crown Prince. Although the King’s indifference hurt him, he chose not to dwell on it.

Meanwhile, Yi-rang insists her 8-year-old son cannot yet handle royal duties. As a result, she pushes Yi An to prove his loyalty by agreeing to marry a woman of her choosing.

Hui-ju’s Father Pressures Her Into Marriage

Seong Hui-ju’s father and sister-in-law pressure her to marry, but she refuses to marry an incompetent husband they would choose. Instead, she pushes back and insists she won’t follow their plans. She also makes it clear that she is her father’s most capable child, so marrying her off won’t weaken her position or cover up Tae-joo’s lack of skill.

Meanwhile, back at the palace, Prince Yi An meets Lord Sung-won. Sung-won questions why he is leaving the palace and asks who will protect royal interests in his absence. Yi An explains that he will go on leave and will be staying at his private residence.

Afterward, Sung-won warns the Queen Mother not to act impulsively when it comes to Yi An. Although she blames him for recent events, Sung-won reminds her to be careful, since the Grand Prince remains the people’s favored regent.

Seong Hui-ju Proposes Marriage to Grand Prince Yi An in Perfect Crown Episode 1

Back at Castle Group, Hui-ju has a sudden idea. She decides she wants to marry someone in the royal family who is as competent as she is. She then sets her sights on Prince Yi An, who is currently trending because of his outfit at the Crown Prince’s party. Then, she sends a royal visit request.

Meanwhile, the public debates his look. Some praise it as a modern take, while others criticize it as inappropriate to wear a hunting outfit during a banquet. Although Yi An’s aide, Choi-hyun, worries about the backlash, Yi An feels relieved that people are no longer talking about the palace fire.

However, Yi An rejects all of Hui-ju’s royal audience requests. So, when he learns that Hui-ju keeps insisting, he repeatedly orders Choi-hyun to turn her down. This only frustrates Hui-ju, and she claims he is simply playing hard to get.

Still, Hui-ju doesn’t stop. Instead, she reminds Yi An that they are senior school alumni. Eventually, Yi An agrees to meet her and invites her to his place. Soon, Hui-ju arrives confidently, dressed to impress. Then she directly tells Yi An that she wants to marry him. He reacts in disbelief and amusement.

The episode ends with him smiling at her after hearing her sudden proposal.

Perfect Crown Episode 1 Review

The long wait is finally over—Perfect Crown is finally airing, and it was definitely worth the anticipation. We’ve been eager to see this pairing, and they do not disappoint. IU once again shines in a bold, sassy role that brings back the iconic energy we loved in Hotel Del Luna. Meanwhile, Byeon Woo-seok effortlessly delivers a strong royal aura, fully embodying the charm and intensity of his character.

Moreover, the chemistry between the leads and the supporting cast feels natural and engaging, which makes every interaction more compelling. Although it’s only the first episode, it already stands out that the ensemble is strong, with many familiar faces adding identity and depth to the story.

On top of that, Perfect Crown continues to deliver the political intrigue we expect from a strong historical K-drama. Even though it is set in a modern monarchy, the palace still feels like a gilded cage, where status and duty constantly trap the royal family. It raises intriguing questions about how these characters will navigate, confront, and eventually overcome this system as the story unfolds.
