The Sh-Booms This is A Test

The Sh-Booms unveil a cosmic video for “This Is a Test,” blending New Wave, post-punk, funk, and space-rock into a bold, expansive sound.

The Sh-Booms, an Orlando soul-rock powerhouse, return with a striking new music video for “This Is a Test,” the cinematic title track from their latest EP This Is a Test.

This time, director John Taylor brings the song’s cosmic narrative to life. The video transforms it into a vivid, otherworldly experience. It blends performance scenes with a surreal journey through time, space, and survival, adding more depth to the track. He says:

The concept kind of dances through themes of time and space travel, unexpected journeys that lead to discovery, strength in survival and love, all woven through a dynamic performance. I envisioned an emergency evacuation back to Earth, perhaps at a different time or in an alternate universe of possibilities.

Drawing from classic New Wave visuals, including the stylized performance energy of INXS, the video blends nostalgia with forward momentum. It also reflects director John Taylor’s upbringing during the final chapter of the space program in Cocoa Beach, Florida. As a result, the video becomes a visually immersive companion to one of The Sh-Booms’ most ambitious tracks.

Moreover, the team behind the visuals elevates the experience further. Director of Photography Corey Besteder and Performance Lighting Director Joe Allegro shape a high-impact, sensory-driven piece. They channel the track’s full range, from its atmospheric opening to the explosive vocal interplay between Brenda Radney and Alfred Ruiz.

This Is a Test EP

The music video arrives alongside the band’s new EP This Is a Test, their first release since 2019. Across four tracks, The Sh-Booms move beyond their soul roots and explore a wider fusion of soul, post-punk, psychedelia, and funk. At the same time, they keep the raw, communal energy that defines their live shows.

Behind the scenes, Grammy-nominated engineer Alan Armitage, known for his work with Boyz II Men, produced the EP. Meanwhile, Grammy-winning engineer Emily Lazar, who has worked with Beck and Vampire Weekend, handled the mastering. Together, they capture a band that sounds refreshed and energized, pushing into new territory without losing its emotional core.

More than a comeback, This Is a Test marks a creative reset. The EP feels adventurous and expansive, while staying grounded in movement, connection, and release.
