“Best Luck” — It’s Okay, That’s Love (2014)
In 2014, Chen took his first-ever step as a soloist by singing an OST for the melodrama It’s Okay, That’s Love. Starring Zo In-sung and Gong Hyo-jin, it tells the story of two people burdened by their childhood traumas. Despite failing to see eye to eye, they slowly learn to understand one another as they start living under the same roof.
The project left a memorable mark on Chen’s career, opening more opportunities to showcase his skills outside of EXO. Moreover, his fellow member D.O. also made his acting debut in the drama, which makes it even more special for the singer. As the title suggests, “Best Luck” is a track about someone wanting to confess and how lucky they feel to be in love. With Chen’s mellow vocals on repeat, each listen feels as refreshing as the last.
“Everytime” with Punch — Descendants of the Sun (2016)
Oh~ every time I see you! Whether you’re an avid K-drama enthusiast or not, you’ve most definitely heard this iconic OST before. From the 2016 drama Descendants of the Sun, “Everytime” is the track that had us in a chokehold the moment it was released. The soldier-doctor romance featuring the “Song-Song” couple made waves worldwide, and this OST became the background of every “kilig” moment in everyone’s lives ever since.
Punch, another OST giant, lent her voice as the song’s other half. Alongside her delicate vocals, they found the perfect balance between sweet and powerful to create the song we all know and love. “Everytime” is still one of the most viewed K-drama music videos in history, which speaks to its timelessness despite being a decade old.
“Make It Count” — Touch Your Heart (2019)
Another blissful OST to add to the list comes from Touch Your Heart starring Lee Dong-wook and Yoo In-na. The 2019 romcom follows a struggling actress forced to work as a lawyer’s secretary to prepare for an on-screen role and the stoic lawyer who owns the firm she joins. As feelings start to bloom between the two, “Make It Count” becomes the ideal soundtrack for their unlikely relationship.
Like a gentle spring breeze, Chen’s voice feels like the warmth that comes after a long winter. He sings on behalf of someone who wants to engrave each moment they spend with their loved one in their heart. Simple yet sincere, it’s a romantic confession that makes you want to respond.
“Don’t Remember” — Romance in the House (2024)
Ending the list on a warm note, the final track is a nostalgic OST from the 2019 family drama Romance in the House. After disappearing for a decade, a father suddenly comes back to his family as the new landlord of their apartment. As years of neglect and unanswered questions rise to the surface, what could’ve been a heartfelt reunion quickly becomes chaotic. Listening to “Don’t Remember” while watching this drama hits your heart just right with Chen’s lullaby-like voice blending with the calm melody.
One thing about Chen is that he knows exactly how to express the right emotions through his vocals. Whether it’s a cheerful anthem or a melancholic ballad, he excels at embodying each song’s message. Much like a seasoned actor, there’s an air of confidence in his interpretations that leaves you satisfied yet still wanting to hear more.
Don’t miss the chance to hear these timeless OSTs live at Arcadia in Manila! With Chen’s captivating voice and charming presence, every performance will surely be one to remember.
