Pop Corner: Pavane (2026) Ending Explained: Is Love an Illusion?

K-Drama
Pavane

Three different stories of people who find themselves lost in the rhythm of life intertwine, all circling a central question: Is love an illusion?

On February 20, Netflix once again released an emotionally compelling film titled Pavane. The movie unfolds as a quiet yet melodramatic romance that follows three adrift souls searching for meaning in a disenchanted world.

First, the story centers on Lee Gyeong-rok (played by Moon Sang-min), a reserved department store employee who buries his unresolved paternal grief beneath routine and silence. Meanwhile, Mi-jeong (played by Go Ah-sung) works in the store’s basement, where she isolates herself both physically and emotionally. Unlike the tight-knit, image-conscious girls on the sales floor, she retreats further into the darkness she has carefully constructed around herself.

In addition, the narrative introduces Yo-han (portrayed by Byun Yo-han), a charming and magnetic presence who effortlessly connects with both Gyeong-rok and Mi-jeong. His natural chemistry bridges the emotional distance between them; however, beneath his charisma lies a profound loneliness.

These three characters navigate longing, isolation, and fragile connection, gradually revealing the quiet ache that binds them.

Did Gyeong-rok and Mi-jeong start dating?

Yes, they grow closer through small acts of kindness and their shared love of music and dance. As they spend more time together, their connection deepens into a relationship. However, Gyeong-rok continues to wrestle with unresolved pain. He feels haunted by his father, Dong-cheol, who showers affection on his new family while completely neglecting him.

Meanwhile, Yo-han projects confidence and charm at work, but in reality, he battles crushing loneliness. After hours, he drinks heavily, takes pills, and passes out alone. Moreover, rumors circulate that he has attempted to harm himself multiple times. Eventually, Mi-jeong and Gyeong-rok find him hospitalized in critical condition, forcing them to confront the depth of his despair.

Why does Mi-jeong leave?

Later, Gyeong-rok invites Mi-jeong to join him and his friends for drinks, where they talk about dance. However, he drinks excessively and fails to notice her discomfort. Instead of walking her home or inviting her in thoughtfully, he lets the night end awkwardly.

Afterward, Mi-jeong reflects deeply on everything. Ultimately, she decides to leave. In a letter to Gyeong-rok, she admits how difficult it was to put her feelings into words. Although she had begun to find light in her life, Yo-han’s suicide attempt triggers old wounds and sends her spiraling. She confesses that she has always felt like an outsider, trapped in darkness since childhood—until she met him.

Nevertheless, her love frightens her. She realizes that she loves Gyeong-rok so completely that she fears watching their relationship crumble into tragedy. Therefore, she chooses to preserve their happiness as it was. In the end, she tells him she loves him—and says goodbye.

Do Mi-jeong and Gyeong-rok get back together?

After Mi-jeong leaves, Gyeong-rok tries to move on. However, he cannot recreate the connection he shared with her, especially when he spends time with Se-ra—the polished, popular coworker who once belittled Mi-jeong. Ironically, once Mi-jeong stands up for herself with Gyeong-rok’s support, Se-ra eventually helps him by tracking down Mi-jeong’s address.

Determined not to lose her again, Gyeong-rok sends Mi-jeong a heartfelt message. He tells her he misses her and promises to wait for her every day starting Christmas Eve at the train station. On his way there, however, a highway accident delays him. Nevertheless, he runs the rest of the way and finds Mi-jeong waiting. They reunite and rekindle their relationship, this time with greater warmth and understanding. Meanwhile, Yo-han also begins to show signs of recovery. Yet just as hope resurfaces, Gyeong-rok fails to show up for a promised New Year’s Eve meeting, leaving questions hanging in the air.

Pavane Ending Explained

Five years later, life looks different. Yo-han becomes a bestselling author and performs as part of a band. In addition, Mi-jeong works as a nursery school teacher and carries herself with newfound brightness and stability.

So what happened to Gyeong-rok? On the night he disappeared, his bus collided with a truck. He survived but endured a long rehabilitation process and suffered partial memory loss, which prevented him from returning to a normal life. Through their shared love of music, Mi-jeong and Gyeong-rok eventually reconnect at a concert. From there, Yo-han’s version of the story imagines them traveling to Iceland and living happily ever after.

However, that ending exists only in Yo-han’s writing. In reality, Gyeong-rok has passed away. Even so, Mi-jeong and Yo-han continue living forward, carrying the light he once gave them.

Pavane: A Deep Movie to Mourn For

Earlier in the film, the title Pavane references Pavane for a Dead Princess, a slow and mournful composition centered on remembrance rather than celebration. Similarly, music binds the three characters from the beginning. It brings them together, strengthens their bond, and ultimately helps them process grief.

Gyeong-rok’s death becomes the emotional crescendo of that melody. Although he succumbs to darkness, Mi-jeong and Yo-han consciously choose light. Moreover, they honor him not by collapsing under loss but by living fully in spite of it. The hopeful ending Yo-han writes may not reflect reality; nevertheless, it captures the emotional truth he needs to survive. In that sense, perhaps it offers the audience the same quiet comfort.
