Nian Tong wraps up the heartbreaking experience of modern romance into a new whimsical indie pop number, “What’s On Your Mind.”
London-based singer-songwriter, producer, and composer, Nian Tong drops his new single “What’s On Your Mind?” ahead of the release of his upcoming second EP Gradually. Inspired by the singer’s own experience of being ghosted, the track tackles familiar feelings of self-doubt and confusion. All while capturing the feeling of a heartbreak that stays hopeful despite it all.

Love in the time of ghosts
In September 2023, Nian Tong had just moved to London, hoping to experience the city’s culture, music, and art. Perhaps finally connect with someone he had been in touch with for years. Though the connection never materialized, he ended up writing “What’s On Your Mind,” a departure from his earlier releases with its more modern pop sound.
Despite its subject matter, “What’s On Your Mind’s” bouncy keyboards and echoey strings come together to make a bright. A feel-good indie pop melody that stays true to the optimism that marks Nian Tong’s sound. Nian produced the track himself, while Kevin Peterson, who also worked on Camila Cabello’s “Havana,” did the mastering.
Getting to know Nian Tong
Originally focused on writing and producing for other artists, Nian Tong gradually began to find his voice as an introverted, queer artist. He eventually released his first EP In My Mind in 2023. He also collaborated as a musical theater orchestrator with the National Theater of China and composed original stage works, including Instant Luv Noodles, which has been staged in the UK and Japan.
His next EP Gradually is a project focused on love in the digital age and how connections are formed in the modern dating scene. To stay updated on his future projects, follow Nian Tong on Instagram.
