Up Dharma Down "Tadhana"

All-time OPM hit “Tadhana” by Up Dharma Down hits 500M streams on Spotify, cementing its status as one of Filipino music’s most iconic songs, loved by many.

After a decade on the Spotify Philippines chart, “Tadhana” cemented its place as the longest-charting track in Filipino music history. With this achievement, Up Dharma Down raised the bar for OPM, as the song crossed 500 million streams on Spotify.

Because of its consistent chart presence, “Tadhana” may be regarded as a modern OPM classic. It regularly echoes through karaoke rooms and late-night sing-alongs. More importantly, it carries a timeless quality that keeps listeners coming back again and again.

At the same time, the song’s emotions continue to strike a chord with many Filipinos. For those who believe in fate, the narrative feels intentionally open-ended. The meeting may be destined, yet the outcome remains uncertain. Instead of promising forever, the song suggests that some connections simply shape who we become.

Making of “Tadhana”

Originally released in 2012 under UDD’s album Capacities, the song actually began two years earlier. Back in 2010, former vocalist Armi Millare started writing it while staying at Mount Santo Tomas in Benguet. During a bus ride to Baguio, she received a call asking her to produce a song for a TV show in just three days. Because of that tight deadline, she poured her feelings into the piece, laying the foundation for what would later become one of OPM’s defining tracks.

After recording an initial draft on her phone, Millare finalized the song when she returned to Manila. Soon after, Carlos Tañada on lead guitar, Ean Mayor on drums, and Paul Yap on bass stepped in and elevated it with what she described as their “magical arrangement.” Together, Up Dharma Down shaped the version that fans continue to cherish.

Ultimately, this milestone highlights the depth and sincerity of Original Pilipino Music. Through “Tadhana,” Up Dharma Down proves that OPM can endure, evolve, and resonate across generations.
