Motherhood takes center stage as we learn more about the Mother TF team while Jihyeok and Darim find common ground in Dynamite Kiss Episode 4, “His Black Card.”
Dynamite Kiss episode 4 is starting to dig deep into the deeper themes of the story beyond its central romance, as well as get into proper K-drama shenanigans. Heartfelt conversations balance out trope-y moments that require suspension of disbelief, bringing out the tenderness in our characters. In Dynamite Kiss episode 4, titled “His Black Card,” Jihyeok and Darim get forced into proximity while the Mother TF team girls gain a little more backstory.

Worth dying for
Darim is trying to put together the report that Jihyeok had just thrown into the water. When he asks her if her report was worth drowning over, Darim reiterates that it represents the team’s livelihoods and asks him to give it a chance.
Darim walks home after being drenched and blown off. Jihyeok passes by while presumably driving home from the pool and offers her a ride. He gives her a chance to explain her report on the 15-minute ride to her place, and Darim enthusiastically jumps on the opportunity. Jihyeok gives her advice on how to improve the report, saying that even documents have to be “sexy” (aka appealing) to their readers.
The chase
Debt collectors meet Darim when she arrives home, demanding payment for her sister’s loans. She almost escapes them by putting on an accent and pretending to be someone else, but Jihyeok comes around and yells her name. She had forgotten her phone in his car.
They run through the alleys, trying to lose the loan sharks, and end up in a small abandoned closet at the side of the street. (Suspension of disbelief moment #1.) They stand face-to-face in the enclosed space until the coast is clear, so close that Jihyeok’s hair is in Darim’s face. But the moment is interrupted when the door is wrenched open by Seon-u, who had seen the thugs on his way home and joined the chase.
Seon-u introduces himself as Darim’s husband. Though it looks like the beginning of a heated confrontation, the three of them part on relatively civil terms, with the two men agreeing that they were both too aggressive on the jump. Seon-u carries Darim, who had hurt her foot while running, on his back, while a visibly dejected Jihyeok watches.
Back to work
Gyeongmin, now working as the assistant team leader on the Mother TF team, visits Jihyeok while he’s agonizing over what happened. Gyeongmin tells Jihyeok that his sister, Director Gong, has been grilling him about Jihyeok missing work. Jihyeok returns to work the next day, less because of his sister and more to see Darim again.
Darim stayed up all night to trim down the 26-page-long report into 5 pages in an effort to “make it sexy.” While the report itself is a success, the Mother TF team bear ill feelings toward Jihyeok, who they see as a freeloader. Jihyeok doesn’t care what his team thinks about him and still wants Darim to resign, claiming that he only saved her out of basic human decency.
The cool mom
Thinking about Darim’s inherited debt to the loan sharks, Seonu reconsiders Hayeong’s offer. He finds Hayeong at the art hall, where she is adjusting an artwork on a tall ladder while wearing heels. She inevitably falls. Seon-u catches her, and Hayeong instantly notices how handsome he is.
Seon-u and Hayeong meet about the upcoming exhibition. Hayeong’s mother interrupts their conversation, announcing the cancellation of the exhibition due to Hayeong’s insistence on bringing in unknown artists. Seon-u, who clearly prepared a lot for this meeting, overhears the discussion and takes his leave.
Later, Hayeong goes to Seon-u’s studio to apologize for what happened. Seon-u is busy with work and doesn’t want to talk about it. Some clients come in late, and he is unable to pick up his son Jun from daycare.
Completely ignoring the stranger danger of this situation, Hayeong volunteers to pick up Jun. (Suspension of disbelief moment #2.) Jun becomes the kid with the “cool and pretty mom” at daycare. As they walk home, Hayeong learns that Jun never met his mother, and Jun tells Hayeong he wishes she was his dad’s girlfriend.
My mother’s keeper
After his dad reprimands him for skipping work, Jihyeok receives news that his mom fell down the stairs and broke her leg. He rushes to the hospital.
Through a flashback, we learn that Jihyeok is very protective of his mother because she was psychologically traumatized by his dad’s affair. The other woman did not tell Jihyeok’s dad that they had a daughter, Jihye (Director Gong), and he only knew about Jihye after the woman died. Jihyeok’s mom did not want to accept Jihye, but she was forced to stay in the arranged marriage with Jihyeok’s dad because his family saved hers from bankruptcy.
Darim meets Jihyeok in the hall while caring for her mom, who’s in the same hospital. Though Darim complains a lot about the team leader who gives her a hard time, her mother tells Jihyeok how grateful she is that he hired her.
Darim opens up to Jihyeok about her family situation, telling him about her sister who borrowed money and how her mother suffered a heart attack from the stress. They share the same sentiment about wanting to protect their mothers, who had worked so hard to make them feel safe and happy. Darim convinces Jihyeok to give the team of hardworking mothers another chance. They mutually agree, somewhat regretfully, to forget about their kiss and move on.
Playing games
Director Gong tries to throw the Mother TF team another curveball and makes them do a live selling event. Jihyeok doesn’t want to do it, but the Mother TF members are enthusiastic.
Jihyeok and Darim get paired up to shop for products to use as prizes for the event, which of course leads to them getting mistaken for a couple. At the mall, there’s a contest for couples with children, and the prize is BeBeZza, a baby formula maker so popular that even the company itself ran out of stock. (Suspension of disbelief moment #3.)
The contest has Jihyeok carrying Darim to fit onto a sheet of newspaper. They also share another accidental kiss when the paper for the “suck and blow” game falls between them and leads to them losing the game. However, Jihyeok uses his black card to pay the winning couple for the BeBeZza, and they end up getting the prize anyway.
Live selling
Unfortunate incidents befall the Mother TF members who were supposed to host the event. Namsook’s youngest child is running a fever and has to go to the hospital, while Jinhui’s phone fell on her face and left a bruise. As a result, the remaining members, Goeun and Darim, have to take over.
Despite the shaky start, they soon get into the rhythm of it until Darim asks Goeun to talk about their product, Angel Hug diapers. Goeun talks about how she only used Angel Hug while taking care of her child, who she gave birth to right after graduating high school. Her husband passed away in a traffic accident, and she had to raise her daughter alone on the supply of Angel Hug diapers Natural Bebe had donated.
The viewers are touched by Goeun’s story, but she is emotional and has to leave the set, leaving Darim to do the diaper demonstration. Darim is able to do it successfully, but it still leaks because Mr. Ma sliced it. Mr. Ma scolds Darim for her performance, but Jihyeok defends her, saying she’s his responsibility.
Dynamite Kiss episode 4 ends with Darim getting kidnapped by the loan sharks, who are out to sell her organs if she cannot pay up, but as always, Jihyeok comes in the nick of time. He kicks down the door and holds up his black card, asking how much.
Dynamite Kiss Episode 4 Thoughts and What To Expect Next
Now that the romance has settled in, the show is moving towards its other themes of motherhood and class. It’s understandably not a very deep exploration of these themes, given that that’s not the focus of the show, but it makes for genuinely touching moments and honors the mother characters who make up the supporting cast. Hopefully, Dynamite Kiss continues in this vein and shows more of the different aspects and struggles of motherhood alongside the developing romance plotline.
In the next episode, it seems that Jihyeok is finally seeking a reimbursement for the multiple times he’s saved Darim. Also, Seon-u joins the team, which will surely lead to more complications in the Natural Bebe office.
